Zinef to challenge gag order in Con-Court

HARARE - Zimbabwe National Editors’ Forum (Zinef) is prepared to challenge the gagging of the media in the Constitutional Court so as to protect the Fourth Estate and general public’s interests.

This comes after former Premier Service Medical Aid Society (Psmas) chief executive officer, Cuthbert Dube, gave all media houses an ultimatum to stop publishing expose´s on his alleged abuse of public funds at the medical aid society, failing which he threatened to approach the courts for an interdict.

Brian Mangwende, the Zinef chairperson, said the media will not be cowed from exposing corruption by officials named in the ‘salarygate scandal’.

“If need be, we will approach the Constitutional Court for redress because the media cannot be intimidated for doing its job,” Mangwende said.

The Zinef boss said the recent statement by Dube’s lawyers threatening the media was uncalled for because the Psmas boss has through this expose been given a platform by the media to give his own side of story, which he rebuffed.

“If Dube or anyone feels aggrieved by the media, they should approach the Voluntary Media Council for redress. Dube has been given the chance to tell us his own side of story, but he hasn’t,” Mangwende said.

He said the issue of the obscene salaries is actually being discussed in Parliament.

“What will happen then, will Dube stop the media from reporting issues discussed in the august House?”

Mangwende said the salary scandals have even shocked the powers that be.

“The corridors of power are shocked at the salary scandals,” he said.
