Gumbura's wives disown police statement

HARARE - Eight women from Robert Martin Gumbura’s church, facing charges of possessing and disseminating pornographic pictures, have rejected a police statement they reportedly made and tendered as exhibit in court.

Choice Neganye, 32, Amadeus Mutakwa, 32, Rutendo Sekai Mandiya, 28, Pamela Kandawire, 27, Runyararo Musvosvi, 27, Veronica Mbanga, 27 Tendai Kwatara, 34 and Moreblessing Takawira, 35, all deny contravening the Censorship Act.

The women, who include Gumbura’s wives, claimed State witness Tariro Rangwani, the investigating officer, was an imposter and forged the statements.

Rangwani had initially testified that the women told her that they took turns to photograph each other and said they did it for fun.

She told the court that she had interviewed and recorded the women’s statements in the presence of their lawyer Emmanuel Samundombe and one detective constable Zvenyika.

Through their lawyer Rekai Maposa, the women denied that the extracts belonged to them and claimed Rangwani did not interview them.

They denied responsibility for information contained in the statements as well as the signatures and alleged the State was withholding the true and correct statements.

“She is just an imposter and that explains why she was in court when this matter was brought before you, your worship,” Maposa said.

“Accused persons actually claim that witness was involved in the Gumbura case and not theirs.”

Prosecutor Michael Reza refuted claims that Rangwani could have been an imposter since she was actually the investigating officer.

“For the witness to be an imposter she would have to have a photographic memory. The fact that she managed to identify the accused persons by name while they were sitting in no particular order is evidence that she dealt with accused persons,” said Reza.

“These statements are not confessions. Accused persons even denied the charges and explained why they took the photographs before endorsing their signatures on them. The documents are like any other documentary exhibits witnesses can be cross-examined on.”

In their defence outline, the women said the allegations were propelled by Gumbura’s adversaries, who wanted to make sure that he goes to prison with his wives.

Maposa claims that no offence was committed because the police discovered the pictures in a private room, locked up in a cupboard.

According to State papers, the women were allegedly found in possession of 16 pornographic DVDs and 57 nude photographs of themselves, following a police raid.

The women were arrested after police officers received information claiming incidences of child abuse at Number 6 Helena Close, Marlborough, Harare, the court heard.

I don't seem to see anything wrong in them joining their husband in the gaol, so they should be pushing to join Chikurubi; I hope conjugal rights are allowed...

We cannot exonerate a bad thing because a million people are doing it, neither can we point fingers at those who have committed worst things. William Wilberforce spoke against slavery when all thought it was okay. Lets call a spade a spade. lets pray for repentance.
