3 teachers' union members up for $560 000 fraud

HARARE - Three committee members with Teachers Union of Zimbabwe Ushewokunze Housing Cooperative connived to dupe home-seekers of more than $560 000.

Martin Maburutse, 45, Moffat Katuli, 45, and Daniel Chiwandire, 47, appeared before Harare magistrate Vakayi Chikwekwe facing $563 632, 50 fraud.

They were remanded to February 12 on $200 bail each.

The three were ordered to reside at their given addresses and not interfere with State witnesses until the matter is finalised.

Prosecutor Sharon Mashavira alleged that in 2003, Teachers Union of Zimbabwe formed the housing cooperative comprising 518 members.

She alleged that they were given land at Saturday Retreat Farm in Harare South by the ministry of Local Government and Housing Development.

The court heard that in 2009, a committee comprising Maburutse, Katuli, Chiwandire and Fibion
Mudamburi and Melvin Gwishiri, who are already on remand, and Sikonjiwe Gweshere, Catherine
Chiweshe and Kudzai Severa, who are still at large; was formed to oversee developmental affairs of the cooperative, the court heard.

The cooperative opened two FBC accounts in which Maburutse, Mudamburi, Gwishiri and Severa were signatories.

It is State’s case that cooperative members contributed $763 623,50 between 2009 and 2013 meant for water and sewer reticulation installation.

Maburutse and others converted $563 623, 50 to their own use and only accounted for $200 000.

During April last year, the accused persons were requested by other cooperative members to account for the money but failed.
