Gold panner buried alive

KWEKWE - An 18-year-old Kwekwe gold panner died when a mine shaft he was working on collapsed burying him alive early yesterday.

Bornwell Chigumbu, who arrived from Gokwe three months ago in search of greener pastures in the small mining town of Kwekwe, fell into a mine shaft believed to be more than 10 metres deep.

According to eye witnesses the 18-year-old was buried in the morning at around 9am, only for his body to be exhumed seven hours later.

The tragedy comes amid calls by the Gold Miners Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) for authorities to formalise activities by small scale miners in the country which will contribute to the health and safety of miners.
