We will take charge: MDC veterans

BULAWAYO - The MDC Veterans Activists Association (MDCVAA), says it is regrouping in the wake of the current squabbles in the party.

The organisation formed in 2008 by concerned founder members of the party to look into the affairs of political victims, says it is disturbed by individuals in the party who are bent on destroying the party through undemocratic means.

MDC deputy treasurer-general, Elton Mangoma touched off a storm in the party last week after he publicly called for leadership renewal. But latest reports indicate that party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai and Mangoma met over the weekend where they agreed to bury the hatchet.

Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, MDCVAA national organising secretary Khumbulani Sibanda threatened unspecified action against people who want to dethrone the MDC founding president outside congress.

“As an association we are going to guard jealously the gains of this party. We are fully behind Tsvangirai despite all forms of attack against him by these trigger-happy boys who are being used by some known charlatans in the party,” Sibanda said.

MDC national chairperson, Lovemore Moyo also waded into the hotly-contested matter by calling people who want Tsvangirai to step down to instead quit the party.

Several top party officials like Roy Bennet, Ian Kay and Eddie Cross have publicly declared their position on leadership renewal.

But Sibanda yesterday declared war, arguing that will not happen in their presence as founding “war veterans” of the party.

“We have already started regrouping throughout the country. I am talking of over 65 000 card carrying members. It should be noted that anyone who tampers with Tsvangirai will certainly face the music,” said Sibanda.

“We do not have problems with people like Elias Mudzuri whose presidential ambition we know. We do not want people like Mangoma who think they can gain credibility by writing letters to the media yet we have proper channels to follow,” Sibanda said.

He said from the previous meetings they had conducted with different provinces, they had resolved to rally behind Tsvangirai and his deputy Thokozani Khupe all the way.

He also blamed what he termed too much mafikizolos (opportunists) in the MDC national council for the challenges the party is going through.

A press release by the association chairperson Victor Zunza, said the events currently unfolding in the party were regrettable.

“We begin to wonder whether we are still together in the struggle or some have been infiltrated and are wining and dining with those very same people oppressing and subverting peoples will in our beloved country,” Zunza said.

He accused Zanu PF of infiltrating in the MDC leadership structures as part of its broader plan to demoralise and humiliate Tsvangirai.

A useless party of leadership cults and hero worshippers indeed. No difference with its counterpart, the gukurahundi party ZANU PF. These are the same people who should loudly day in and day out about democracy, yet they dont even understand it. All these efforts to dislodge the dictatorship is simply sn effort at removing one dictatorship and replacing it with another dictatorship!!!

PHUNYUKABEMPHETHE!!! - 5 February 2014

Why does the MDC love ZANU PF so much to the extent of borrowing and worshiping their strategies.

I have to understand who these so called "veterans" are from, surely with my immense contribution from the founding days of the MDC I am a veteran in my own right and i disagree with such bootlicking and hero worshipping being exhibited here. .MT must answer the five questions put accross by Mangoma. Mangoma is correct, we need to protect the democratic fibre of the movement, this "Handiende syndrome" is true traits of ZANU PF DNA. We need leadership renewal

The veteran tag goes to persons who have made major achievements. What have these MDC veterans done. They have been quietly abused, jailed, tortured, killed, their women raped, and achieved NOTHING on the political front. That Morgen guy you are fond of is a certified woman abuser and will never rule this country with the ignorance and lack of tact he has. Muchazomuka after he has abused your sister. MDC needs a change of leadership to survive. At the next election Zanu will have a new leader and it will be MDC with a geriatric womaniser campaigning for them

The biggest Zanu pf infiltrator is Morgen, who has proposed to two very well known zanu members and married the other, and here you are exhibiting your ignorance by accusing Zanu of infiltrating your organization when your beloved leader is the one inviting them in. If you have any semblance of reasoning Khimbulani, kick your current party president in the teeth for destroying the party than helping him destroy it, unless if you are a hired gun to destroy it yourself, infiltrator.
