Mwenezi DA spared jail after farm seizure

MASVINGO - A Mwenezi District Administrator (DA) was lucky to escape jail after a local magistrate fined him $80 for assaulting a disabled white commercial farmer he chased from his farm.

Masvingo magistrate Oliver Mudzongachiso convicted DA Stanley Chamisa, 60, last week for assaulting the handicapped farmer.

He appeared jointly in court with his son Watson, 27, who was acquitted for want of evidence.

Magistrate Mudzongachiso found Chamisa guilty of assaulting William Archibald Strander on October 27 last year.

The assault took place while he was forcing him out of his farm under the controversial land reform programme.

Chamisa, who stays at GP1105 at Mwenezi Growth Point near Rutenga, escaped a three-month jail term after he was given an option to pay an $80 fine.

James Nyamapfeni, prosecuting, told the court that on October 27, Chamisa and his son, accompanied by two police details, drove to Strander’s homestead at Benjani Ranch farm.

The DA and his companions met Strander on their way to grab the farm while he was driving in the opposite direction. They stopped him.

The group allegedly demanded that the white farmer makes a U-turn and head back to his homestead but Strander refused.

The DA then insulted the farmer using abusive language.

There was an exchange of harsh words, resulting in the former punching Strander.

The white farmer sustained injuries on the neck and arm. Chamisa was later restrained by police officers after he allegedly tried to pick a boulder in a bid to smash Strander’s car.

Strander reported the case to the police, leading to the arrest of the Chamisas.

The physically-challenged  white farmer has since hauled Chamisa before the Constitutional Court over the seizure of his farm.

He argues he was exempt from the land grabs because he was treated as a person of a special interest group due to his disability.
