Rapist jailed 15 years

HARARE - A Kuwadzana man will spend the next 15 years in jail for raping an eight-year-old girl.

Takunda Handina, 30, was sentenced to 18 years in jail by Harare magistrate Sandra Mpindu after being convicted of raping a minor.

Three years were suspended on condition Handina does not commit an offence of a sexual nature within five years of his release.

In passing sentence, Mpindu considered that Handina was a first time offender and also noted that he had ruined the girl’s life.

She said the girl could have contracted sexually-transmitted diseases.

She said Handina had committed a serious offence punishable by a custodial sentence.

Prosecutor Ressie Nyamombe proved that on December 2, Handina approached the victim who was playing at her house.

He offered to give her a haircut and took her to his barber shop.

While at his work place, he forced the girl into the toilet before raping her.

Handina threatened the victim against revealing the offence, but she told her aunt, leading to Handina’s arrest.
