10 Zim players for AJC in Morocco

HARARE - Tennis Zimbabwe (TZ) will next month send 10 junior players for the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Under-18 African Junior Championships in Morocco early next month.

Zimbabwe will be represented by Nicole Dzenga, Zarha Finnigan, Latifah Yasini, Keren Muswere in the girls’ category while in the boys category rising star Courtney Lock will be joined by Alwyn Mushonga, Luca Picci, Tadiwa Chinamo and Ngoni Makambwa.

“We are happy that preparations are going on well and as TZ we are confident that the players are going to shine,” TZ administrator Cliff Nhokwara told the Daily News yesterday.

“As usual players are selected using national ranking points and the team that was selected is going to raise our country’s flag high in Morocco.”

“So far we have seven players that automatically qualify to play in the tournament."

Nhokwara said the association expects an improved performance from the Zimbabwean contingent this year as some of the players have since gained valuable experience from futures tournaments and the South African junior circuit.

"We are still considered part of the elite developing nations in the continent and the Southern region. Usually it's South Africa, us, Mauritius and Madagascar. I hope with time we will be able to challenge South Africa," said Nhokwara
