Bogus detective apprehended

BULAWAYO - A Bulawayo conman, who masqueraded as a police detective, ran out of luck when he arrested a bona fide detective for off-loading passengers at an undesignated point in the city centre.

Dominic Mamhunze, 31 was not asked to plead when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Gladmore Mushove  to answer allegations of impersonation.

He was remanded out of custody to January 17 on free bail.

The State alleges that on January 7 at around 5pm, Mamhunze approached the complainant who had parked his vehicle at corner Leopold Takawira Avenue and Fort Street in Bulawayo unaware that he is a detective stationed in Gwanda.

Mamhunze introduced himself as a police officer stationed at CID Vehicle Traffic Section based at the Drill Hall in Bulawayo and accused the complainant of off-loading passengers at a non-designated point as well as failing to display motor vehicle insurance and licence disk on the windscreen, the court was told.

He later told the complainant that he was under arrest and ordered him to drive the vehicle to the CID VTS for further management.

The complainant complied and drove to the said destination.

But on arrival, the court heard, the accused realised that the complainant was known to many details at the CID VTS offices as they exchanged greetings.

The accused then pretended to be greeting other officers and took that opportunity to sneak away undetected from the station.

Mamhunze was arrested the following day by one of the detectives who had seen him arrive at the station the previous day together with his “prisoner”.
