Mambare sparks debate

HARARE - The shock transfer of star midfielder Masimba Mambare from bitter rivals Highlanders to Dynamos has sparked passionate debate in the Zimbabwean football fraternity, with a leading Bulawayo-based daily paper going to the extent of labelling the player a “traitor” in a screaming headline.

Bosso Live, the club’s official Facebook fan page, went a step further and placed Mambare on pole position on a list of world football’s worst traitors, even ahead of Luis Figo, who moved between famous Spanish rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid, and Robin Van Persie, who quit Arsenal for English Premiership foes Manchester United.

According to Bosso Live, the top 10 of the worst traitors in football history is as follows, in that order: Masimba Mambare (Highlanders to Dynamos), Luis Figo (Barcelona to Real Madrid), Sol Campbell (Tottenham to Arsenal), Ashley Cole (Arsenal to Chelsea), Mario Gotze (Dortmund to Bayern Munich), Sami Nasr (Arsenal to Manchester City), Luis Enrique (Real Madrid to Barcelona), Carlos Tevez (Manchester United to Manchester City), Robin Van Persie (Arsenal to Manchester United), Ronaldo (Barcelona to Real Madrid ) (AC Milan to Inter Milan ) (Corinthians to Flamingo ).

27-year-old Mambare joined Bosso’s bitter rivals Dynamos on Monday on a three-year deal, ending a two-year stay at the a club that gave him fame after joining from Motor Action in 2011.

The reaction to Mambare’s move on social networks ushered the latest chapter of enmity between Highlanders and Dynamos, which has characterised the rivalry between the country’s two biggest football intuitions.

Comments accompanying Bosso Live’s post were largely passionate and abusive, most of them unprintable in a family newspaper.

Players from outside Bulawayo have previously complained of being targeted for persecution by the club’s fans when things have not being going the team’s way on the pitch.

Late last season when he went through a lean spell, Mambare was constantly booed by the club’s fans, prompting the former Motor Action man to take his frustration to Facebook, threatening to quit the club if the abuse did not stop.

Kwekwe-born Mambare later withdrew his remarks, but being out of contract, a move away from Bosso was always on the cards until the offensive midfielder took advantage of the Warriors camp ahead of the forthcoming Chan finals to conclude a deal with the record Zimbabwean champions.

While there have not been major direct transfers from Dynamos to Highlanders over the years, such players as Makwinji Soma-Phiri, Lovemore Ncube and Lenny Gwata have previously made moves from Bulawayo to join Dynamos.

“This is the same guy who almost scooped the Soccer Star of the Year award playing in Bosso colours, this is the very same guy who after being booed by the club's fans went on to produce a brilliant performance in the latest Mbada Diamonds Cup Final, and today he is now a traitor,” commented regular football blogger Raymond Tembo on Facebook.

Chronicle editor, Mduduzi Mathuthu, whose paper branded Mambare a traitor, yesterday stood by the publication’s story.

“We labelled him a traitor because on the 28th of November after rumours surfaced that he wanted to live, he went on his Facebook and assured Highlanders fans that he will be staying,” Mathuthu told the Daily News yesterday.

“He went on further to confirm that he will be staying with Highlanders in an interview he gave to us during that period. Even the Highlanders chairperson was shocked that he had signed for Dynamos because he assured him that he will sign a new contract once he returned from the Chan tournament.

“Obviously ‘traitor’ is the word on most Highlanders fans’ lips because when you give a gentleman’s agreement, most people expect you to honour it.”

Mduduzi must behave like a seasoned journalist, similary Dynamos was assured by Simba Sithole, Rodrick Mutuma and many other players that they were going to be part of the Dynamos family and were registered as such in Champions league and only to pack their bags and went to ABSA. Herald never screamed neither did u. I do not want to call you a tribalist by may be forced to, be ashamed and it is a personal decision. The only painful thing to BOSSO is that they had no benefit from this move but life goes for Mambare.

labeling masimba mambare a traitor coz he signed for dembare after bosso failed to pay his sign on fee in 2 yrs is pathetic.boso fans shld get rid of the management coz of poor planning.if dynamos paid him 15,000-00 bucks then makorokoto they appreciate value in him.poor boso dont be misled by false prophet about winning titles based on fake conditions.work hard and have faith in winning psl title.

you dynamos fools, sorry 'supporters just shut up. you have got your own Sharuko writing good stories and seeing no evil about your team. Remember Bosso had the right of first refusal over Mambare!!!! he should not have promised to sign even though to some of us its GOOD RIDDANCE!! the guy always froze against Dynamos and it showed where his loyalty was. As for insulting Mathuthu, i think you are lost there. what is the definition of a traitor? if you know that then Mambare easily fits. But i foresee a situation where he will be a big flop like that ginger haired scrap you got from hwange!!!! he will surely remember the famous black and white jersey

bosso for life - 8 January 2014

Is this the guy you used to be at New Zimbabwe? Hoo nhai I had forgotten. Saka akazopihwa basa ku Chronicle nhai? Horaiti ndiye ega here ko Magents zvaakauya vakamuti traitor here, ko Ngodzo zvaakaenda ku FC Platinum vakamuti Traitor here? Haiwavo tovaziva vakaudzwa chikwadi voti tribalism.

Eish bantu nxa sifuni peace lets report wisely without inciting others to hate our players. Kutamba bhora ibasa but if your employer is not paying you for the services you are rendering to him then surely one should go where the grass is greener.

Makombe - 8 January 2014

Can someone tell something? what is this noise about is Mambare greater than Kwinji 15, Lenny Gwata? Dynamos is a big institution and can attract great players,Hylander is coming second here it has to win the championship for the African Safari to attract big boys no one doesnot resist the chance to play at that level Masimba included

takurira nhamo - 9 January 2014

someone say Hylander had first refusal option, you first refuse when someone came to you for his services and in this case he took his services to Dembare period

takurira nhamo - 9 January 2014

Unfortunately, Prof. Moyo is the one who brought Mathuthu to The Chronicle so I doubt if he will take any action. Mathuthu forgets that he can also be easily coined traitor himself because when he was still editor for the online NewZimbabwe.com he was writing anti Zanu pf but now he is supping with the devil. People living in glass houses must not throw stones!

Blair - 9 January 2014

Mathuthu got it wrong 4 sho.now its us the fans and the beloved citizens of this country who are at each other's throats and the issue is becoming tribal instead.jonos should not fuel hatred amongst us.HE IS A FOOLISH JONO.At least he should have tried to suppress his emotions PROVING that he is a 100% bosso fan.As for the fans i think its very normal to feel betrayed by mambare's move but lets desist from name calling especially unprintable words. The rival between Dembare n Bosso makes Zim Football great but it should remain on the pitch hey.Welcome Mambare sikufiseli inhlanhla yenghle ungayethuselwi labantu.2014 DEMBARE PO PO PO.
