Morocco fire warning shots

HARARE - Zimbabwe's African Nations Championship (Chan) Group B opponents Morocco are confident of topping the group, saying anything short of a semi-final berth will be a failure.

The Atlas Lions have been billed as the group favourites due to the vast exposure of their players and strength of the Moroccan league.

The North Africans will be buoyed by the presence of eight Raja Casablanca players who helped the Moroccan club finish second at the just-ended 2013 Fifa World Club Championship.

Morocco will be aiming to get their campaign off to a winning start when they face the Warriors on January 12 at the Athlone Stadium, just a day after the continental showpiece kicks off in South Africa.

"The players have strong technical and physical potential and are hungry to make a big impact at the tournament,” Morocco national football team coach Benabicha Hassan said.

Uganda’s Cranes, who are making their debut appearance at the biennial tournament are also fancying their chances of progressing through Group B.

Only the tp two teams of the group will qualify to the quarter-finals scheduled for January 25 and 26.

The Paul Put coached side will be hoping Hassan Wasswa Mawanda and goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan, who have featured for South African teams will carry the day for the team.

The Cranes yesterday faced Mauritania in an international friendly at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in their final preparation for the Chan tournament.

Burkina Faso, who face the Warriors on January 16, will be hoping to do without a vast array of overseas stars who have been at the centre of Burkinabe’s recent successes.

The West African country comes into the tournament with an entirely new team  with goalkeeper Laré Mohamed Diarra the only locally based player from the squad that was called up for their final World Cup group qualifier in September.

Meanwhile, the Warriors seeking to go past the preliminary round for the first time in three consecutive appearances are expected to re-group today.

Ian Gorowa’s men face Gabon at the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg a day after touching down in Cape Town next week Monday.
