'Make the most of it'

HARARE - Zimbabwe football coach Ian Gorowa will have one more chance to assess his team before they plunge into the African Nations Championships (Chan) after Gabon this week confirmed their pre-tournament friendly match.

The Warriors are set to face The Panthers at the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg a day after touching down in Cape Town next Monday.

The biennial tournament kicks off on January 11 with the Warriors beginning their campaign against Morocco’s Atlas Lions on January 12.

Zimbabwe are looking to progress from the group stages for the first time in the history of the tournament.

Any hopes of squaring off with a tougher opponent in the build up to the Chan finals were dealt a huge blow after the proposed friendly match against Libya was cancelled amid reports that the North Africans failed to secure air tickets to Harare.

The Warriors’ woes were further compounded after players and the technical team endured a bleak Christmas, breaking camp on Christmas day without receiving any allowances despite being in camp for two weeks.

The ministry of Sport, however, assured Gorowa’s men that they are working flat out to ensure they receive their dues adding that their travel costs, accommodation and allowances in South Africa was all fully covered.

But team manager Sharif Mussa believes despite their trials, the Warriors are made of sterner stuff and will make do with the little they have to go all the way and reach the knock out stages of the Chan finals.

“There was talk that we were engaging Gabon but they had not been any official confirmation until early Tuesday morning,” Mussa told the Daily News yesterday.

“The match against Gabon will be a very good for us.

“We would have wanted to have more friendlies to gauge our preparedness but we just have to make the most of what we have.”

To make it out of the group stage, the Warriors will have to negotiate past Morocco, Burkina Faso, and Uganda who lie in wait in Group B.
