Ingutsheni employees 'assault' patient

BULAWAYO - Three staff members at Ingutsheni Hospital in Bulawayo allegedly assaulted and dislodged the front teeth of a mentally-challenged patient after a food dispute.

This emerged after George Samambwa, 42, Vusimuzi Nzima, 36 and Chamunorwa Mugwagwa, 33 were dragged before Bulawayo magistrate Gladmore Mushove facing assault charges.

The trio, who were employed as general hands at the hospital, were not asked to plead. They were remanded out of custody last Friday to December 22 on $100 bail each.

According to State papers, it is alleged that on November 27, the complainant Samson Ndlovu was visited by his mother who also brought him food.

When it was lunch hour, Ndlovu was summoned by the accused to come and join other patients in the dining room but he turned down the offer arguing he was full.

Not amused by Ndlovu’s decision, Mugwagwa proceeded to where he was seated with his mother and threatened him with unspecified action. When the mother tried to intervene, she was told to back off.

Mugwagwa immediately instructed the mother to leave since they had something to do, the court heard.

Soon after her departure, Mugwagwa assaulted the patient, knocking out his teeth.

In a bid to stop the blood from oozing out, the trio dragged Ndlovu to the treatment room where they reportedly forced him to spit blood and the dislodged teeth into the toilet chamber, the court was told.

Immediately after that, they injected him with a sleeping drug and he went unconscious, only to wake up after four hours while in isolation.

He was taken to where the rest of the patients were by the accused. Ndlovu’s mother returned to the hospital two days later and discovered that her son was injured.

She lodged a complainant with the hospital officials but she was not satisfied with the response, forcing her to file a police report.

The Ministry of Health with the assistance of Home Affairs must look into the goings on at Ingutsheni Hospital. The fact that the authorities at Ingustheni intended to hide the assault issue is very disturbing.
