Makoto geared up for Zim Chess Open

HARARE - Zimbabwean chess ace Rodwell Makoto has intensified preparations for the upcoming Zimbabwe Chess Open to be held in Harare at the end this month.

“I am preparing hard and I am confident that this year I will win the title,” Makoto told the Daily News yesterday.

“I won it three times before so nothing is impossible. I know the competition will be stiff but I will approach my matches with a winning mentality.”

Zambian Godwin Phiri won last year edition after beating his countryman Daniel Jere.

Phiri finished with nine and half points out of eleven games played and he pocketed $2 000.

Zimbabwe’s Spencer Masango finished second with nine points and was tied with Zambian Gillian Gwabwla and Keila Kaulile.

Zimbabwe International chess master Robert Gwaze failed to impress after he finished with seven and half points.

Makoto finished with eight and half points and is hoping to take back the title from the Zambians.
