Minister escapes injury in five-car pileup

HARARE - A Jeep Cherokee carrying David Parirenyatwa, the Health and Child Care minister, was damaged in a pileup yesterday involving four other vehicles in Eastlea in the capital, Harare, witnesses and police officials said.

No one suffered any injuries in the accident. Parirenyatwa, who was chauffeur-driven, said: “I am not sure how the accident occurred but you can ask my driver.”

A column of five cars was passing through Eastlea Shopping Centre when the lead vehicle suddenly stopped because it developed a ball joint problem and it was rammed from behind by a Nissan Elgrande.

It was then rear-ended by Parirenyatwa’s Jeep, witnesses said.

This started a chain reaction collision involving the next three cars.

The minister’s Jeep triggered its airbags which popped out.

The fourth car was almost swallowed under the Jeep.

The cars were then pushed off the road to open up the road before the minister’s Jeep was towed away.

Drivers of the four cars and passengers however, argued bitterly about who was wrong while giving details to the police as they suspected the driver of the first vehicle was unlicensed.

Unlicensed or not he was in front and the others behind did not keep their distance that is why I am more afraid of licensed drivers than unlicensed drivers. Zve license zvinouya papi iwe wabhondera mota iri mberi nekuti you did not keep the correct distance. Ndimi makatenga ma license imi because vakawana feya feya vanoziva how to follow another car.

His Royal Highness David Parirenyatwa can stoop as low as to tell us mere mortals what transpired and we need to ask his driver. Ha zvakaoma

Observer - 12 December 2013

All these drivers need to revisit their highway codes, license or no license, this accident was preventable. Manyuka i agree with you of Diva, my advice to him is to get another chauffeur or to start driving himself around, otherwise munonyura bambo...

Point of correction here. only four cars were involved in this accident. The first car was on a jack and therefore stationary, the elgrand guy only noticed too late that the car in front of him was stationary and he braked. The jeep which had its rear tyres serious worn-out never attempted to brake and rammed into the elgrand. on impact its rear side flow into the other lane and landed on the fourth car which was in that lane. The elgrand was speeding and the jeep was speeding but also following blindly

"The fourth car was almost swallowed under the jeep" Gosh! What kind of English expression is that? When I grew up my father used to encourage me to read newspapers to improve my English language. I don't think I will encourage my children to do the same.

@Chokwadi.So the first car was on a jack BUT was it also displaying the mandatory red triangle 30 metres behind? If so this means the speeding EL Grande plunged into the reflective red triangle first before ploughing into the stationary car on the jack?If so then that is quite bizarre way of driving!

tafamutekwe - 13 December 2013
