Machisa earns top rights gong

HARARE - Okay Machisa, director at Zimrights, won the best director in civil society last week.

Cephas Zinhumwe, director of National Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (Nango), told the Daily News yesterday that Machisa was honoured last week for excellent service in the NGO fraternity.

“Nango held the annual NGO Director Summer School where there were NGO directors from all the regions in the country. Our member organisation voted for the best director in 2013 and Machisa won,” Zinhumwe said.

“Machisa has done a sterling job at Zimrights. Remember, human rights are a very complex issue in Zimbabwe and Machisa has done his best. Zimrights under Machisa is very strong and therefore he deserved the award.”

Machisa was arrested early this year for allegedly conducting illegal voter registration and fraud.

Nango is the umbrella civil society body with almost 1 000 quasi-political members.

A human rights award given to a fraudster who stole large sums of money under a grant provided by the British Embassy and USAID to conduct voter registration and mobilization. So this guy forged receipts of the Registrar-General's office to justify his loot. And the Zimrights Board investigated but decided to sweep things under the carpet for fear of losing more British and USAID funds
