Fatal police chase: Kombi driver charged

HARARE - Twenty year-old kombi driver who ran over a war veteran during a police car chase in Harare’s central business district has been charged with culpable homicide.

Takesure Musara yesterday appeared for his initial remand before Harare magistrate Arnold Maburo. He pleaded guilty. He will be back in court today for sentence.

According to State papers, Musara is a registered driver with classes two, four and five.

Allegations against him arose on Tuesday when he knocked down Raphael Mbanje of Tafara, while reversing his vehicle at the corner of Chinhoyi and Bank streets, as he fled from the police.

According to court papers, Mbanje, who is survived by his wife and seven children, sustained serious head injuries, leading to his instant death.

Prosecutor Oscar Madhume claimed that Musara acted negligently by failing to keep a proper look-out on the road as he reversed the vehicle.

Madhume further told the court that Musara failed to sound his horn, stop or act reasonably when the accident seemed imminent.
