Madhuku's NCA courts Mutambara

HARARE - Lovemore Madhuku, National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader, is courting former Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara to join his party, in an effort to mount a strong opposition against Zanu PF in 2018.

The constitutional law expert transformed the civil rights organisation from a constitutional pressure group advocating a people-driven governing charter, into an opposition political party three months ago.

Mutambara declined to comment.

“I don’t want to talk to you and can you stop bothering me,” he said.

Madhuku referred all questions to the party’s spokesmen Blessing Vava and Madock Chivasa.

“I cannot confirm to you that Mutambara has joined the party,” Vava said.

“As a party, we respect the confidentiality of our members and so I wouldn’t confirm nor deny that Mutambara is with us. But what I can tell you is that a lot of Zimbabweans are excited about the NCA.”

NCA has been courting MDC heavy hitters. Two former MDC mayors Misheck Shoko and Farai Nyandoro joined the party two months ago.

Emmanuel Chiroto, the former deputy Harare mayor, Aaron Chinhara who lost the MDC primaries for Redcliff and former Sunningdale councillor Musa Macheza have also joined the NCA.

Former Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe director Takura Zhangazha also joined the party.

Recently, Job Sikhala disbanded his MDC-99 party and merged it with NCA.

Sikhala said the unified parties will operate under the flagship of NCA and top leadership of the two parties will collaborate until congress scheduled for March  next year.

Madhuku has been on an aggressive recruitment exercise, setting up branches all over the party.

A senior party member who insisted on anonymity told the Daily News this week that overtures have been made to the former deputy premier to join the party.

“He is set to join us very soon. We approached him and he seemed interested,” the source said.

“Mutambara is in the country and currently he is seized with his personal business. If everything goes well, we will unveil him as a member of NCA early next year.”

The source could not divulge which position the professor of robotics will be offered.

“That is still under negotiations but he will get a senior position. He can deputise Madhuku or be given another post, but as of now l cannot tell you exactly which position he will assume,” the source added.

Mutambara has been consigned to political wilderness after the end of the unity government, where he was a deputy Prime Minister.

He was widely tipped to be appointed a minister in President Robert Mugabe’s Cabinet.

Following his snubbing by Mugabe, Mutambara has gone into hibernation. Even his MDC faction is planning the future without him.

Mutambara entered mainstream politics in 2006 after being invited to lead a breakaway MDC faction.

However, he was deposed by Welshman Ncube in 2011.

This NCA outfit is a big joke. Its leader Lovemore Madhuku is a convicted thief. Arthur Mutambara though schooled is a fool. Job Sikhala is one gear ahead of Mutambara in foolishness and can safely be classified as a madman. Emmanuel Chiroto like Madhuku is a thief who enriched himself while he was Hre deputy mayor through tenders. Takura Zhangazha and others are political nonentities not worth mentioning. To be a good politician one needs to be trustworthy and NCA needs to be lacking in that department.

Correction: To be a good politician one needs to be trustworthy and NCA seems to be lacking in that department.

This must be the joke of the year. What is this supposed to mean? Is it not utter disrespect for Zimbabweans? Is this a social club or a money making venture? NCA has died a premature death. Right at it's inception. What is really wrong with these professors? When it comes to politics they are as blind as bats. As for mr Mutambara he should simply quite politics. He was a total disgrace during the GNU. What new ideas or character does he possess now. He is simply confused when it comes to politics. Job Sikhala grew up during the wrong time. His modus operandu belongs to the era gone by. He is archaic. The rest are merely followers trying to find a resting place. We only know two well meaning political parties in this land, MDC (proper) and ZANU-PF. Not all this nonsense. NCA if you are listening we want to tell you that we will never mistake knowledge for wisdom. You will merely confuse the populace period. You have nothing to offer. We would rather wait for MDC than you. We have been taken for a ride many times before. You are just like Mavambo or that other party which was led by Shakespear Maya. Or Welshman Ncube's MDC

There's nothing special about Mutambara. This NCA is yet another waste of political space. Trying to re-invent the wheel this NCA. They are going the same way is the MDCs. Using the same strategy as the MDCs have been using since 1999. I find Mutambara very enigmatic - he is in politics to try and unseat ZanuPF by adopting exactly the same policies as ZanuPF! Mutambara is only after a government sinecure while he conducts his own private business.

If there is a party that must change Zimbabwe's fortunes, it must come from the so-called "nonentities" in the political arena. This business of recycling the same old dead and rotten wood does not work at all. When MDC made an impact, there were very very few known (if any) politicians amongst their ranks. This NCA thing is going to suffer a still-birth if it thinks people like Mutambara are going to change their fortunes.

Zimbabwe can only be liberated by known fighters, people who have balls ready to confront Mugabe Head on. The Trio of Madhuku, Mutambara and Sikala have that history. They are thugs and it is guys with this kind of mentality who can chase away Zanu PF. Cowards using cowardly methods like Tsvangirai history has shown may never take us to the promised land. madhuku please go ahead planning, we are watching at least some of us can foresee that you are setting up a team ready to fight

Political analyst - 6 December 2013

I actually like the combination of Madhuku, Mutambara and Sikala. For us who were grown up then Mutambara then popularly known as AGO made the UZ the epicentre of resistance against injustices by the goverment. He led countless demos into the centre of power and confronted and fought many battles with the riot police, was arrested infinite times. Sikala and Madhuku also have similar histories. My dear Zimbabweans, anybody who dreams of getting into state house like tsvangirai through the ballot is wasting our time. This regime needs a change of tact and this trio seems to have the right credentials to lead a mass revolution to tople Zanu PF. This time lets not think of "I will vote for so and so" because that wont take us anywhere, forget 2018 but let it be" I will be in the streets with Madhuku, Sikala and Mutambara' to tople the regime

ndizvo - 6 December 2013

Yes lets forget the votes, we vote later after toppling the regime. For now we engage them by any means necessary. Here I mean street demos, stayaways, charging at strategic institutions, confronting bullets, facing arrests etc. They can tear gas us and arrest us but they certainly do not have the capacity to kill or arrest all of us. I see a lot of hope in a party whose strategy is to confront Zanu PF over the theft of elections, diamonds, overtaxation, high unemployment rate, lack of opportunities for our kids, lack of drugs in hospitals, exorbitant prices everywhere. Yes Madhuku, Sikala, AGO count me in. I will be there in the streets with you. Tsvangirai has failed us. Kwanzi rangova Bhasikiti ra Tizirai rinoti uku rinorukwa uku rinodudunurwa

Baba Maggie - 6 December 2013

We certainly have done everything civil to remove ZanuPF from power and failed because they use unethical means to cheat their way into power. Morgen made the mistake of abandoning people's power and repeated losses means he will continue loosing for the rest of his miserable life. A new leadership of tough minds like the one being set by Madhuku makes sense at the moment. Zanu PF needs to be challenged not in its courts or elections, because we have been there before BUT in the streets. Sustained street battles and boycots of their businesses and those of the Chinese will bring it to its knees
