Duo faces $100k coal theft rap

HARARE - Two men allegedly stole coal worth more than $100 000 from a coal distribution company, a Harare magistrate heard yesterday.

Aleck Mpakati, 54, and Wisdom Sakala, 32, appeared before Harare magistrate Nowell Mupeiwa facing theft of trust property charges for allegedly swindling Inamo Maguire (Pvt) Limited of $170 000 worth of coal.

Mpakati is employed by Enkay Coal and Trucking in Chinhoyi while Sakala is a part employee at Dunstan Coal Siding in Concession.

Prosecutor Tinashe Kanyemba alleged that purchase of coal was made at Inamo where customers made payments and were issued with receipts which were subsequently taken to Dunstan Siding to collect their coal.

In 2009, Inamo operations director Godfrey Chaitezvi contracted Enkay Coal and Trucking to distribute coal to tobacco farmers and make other purchases. Mpakati was assigned to oversee loading and distribution at Dunstan Siding.

It is the state’s case that sometime between 2010 and 2011, Chaitezvi discovered gradual disappearance of coal from his depot in Concession.

An audit was carried out and discovered a shortfall of 1 117 tonnes of coal which was not accounted for, the court heard.

On July 1 this year, Chaitezvi allegedly received an anonymous call and was informed that Mpakati and Sakala were looting coal.

Chaitezvi was also approached by Kiss Ibrahim who informed him that Mpakati was selling coal to various business people and Sakala acted as a sales representative.

It is further alleged that investigations established that Edmore Nyambo, Nelson Masuku, Tichaona Nyatwa Richard Mbewe and Edward Madondo as buyers of coal who were issued receipts after purchasing coal from Mupakati and Sakala.
