Trial date for 'rape pastor'

HARARE - A bevy of women yesterday besieged the Harare Magistrates’ Court, as Independent End Time Message founder Robert Martin Gumbura, facing multiple rape charges, was brought back in the dock.

Court number 16 was yesterday filled to the rafters with beautiful and neatly dressed women, waiting to hear proceedings in their pastor’s multiple rape charges.

Gumbura, whose bail was recently revoked by High Court Judge Nicholas Mathonsi, is currently in custody.

Mathonsi gave Gumbura up to December 9 to make a fresh bail application.

Gumbura’s rape accusations date back to 2003 and it involves church congregants and the use of pornographic material.

His trial failed to kick off yesterday and is set to commence on December 9.

According to State papers, the controversial pastor allegedly raped a 28-year-old South African woman in 2003.

It is alleged the woman joined Gumbura’s church in 1998 in Shurugwi.

The woman began staying with Gumbura in 2002, after he adopted  her as his child, the court heard.

Gumbura began abusing the woman in 2003 and threatened her with death if she refused to comply.

He continued demanding sex from the woman, who did not report the matter to the police, based on the church’s doctrine that Christians do not take each other to court, but resolve their issues in church.

Prosecutors allege that one of the offences were committed in January 2005, when Gumbura picked a parishioner (name withheld) from her workplace to his house for counselling because she had engaged in a relationship with someone who was not their church member.

Gumbura allegedly raped the woman, before repeating the act the following week.

The woman reportedly fell pregnant on two occasions but Gumbura forced her to abort.

She finally made a police report on October 24 this year.

The State claims Gumbura also sexually abused his sixth wife’s sister, after luring her to buy ice cream after a church service in November 2005.

State alleges another woman was sexually molested in 2009, after being called to the pastor’s offices by Tendai Ganyani.

He allegedly raped another 17-year-old Shurugwi girl (name withheld) in January this year.

this story is becoming to bogus for the complainant. After all this years you bring the case now to the court, did not even confide with anyone close. Jealous is what i see in this women who are now appearing all of a sudden. A man with 9 wives and all the women are happy and satisfied with their husband. this women wanted too be married and enjoy the lavish lifestyle the pastor and his family is living but felt used. Its now revenge time for this women. Raping someone is not easy to stay for more than ten without being noticed or behavioral change no, i don't believe it. Fixing someone because you were intimate and did not get what you wanted and you are now playing a victim. Lets wait and see where this is going. Colonel you questions need answers for sure.

These are evil days and we should expect more terrible things, this so called pastor is evil and these women and their husbands are gullible how can you let your wife sleep with someone in the name of getting blessings and for sure to have someone getting to the point impregnated two times and only to say it now it brings questions than answers truly speaking these case is just going nowhere and the courts are not emotional and they need sober minds that are going to explain how can someone sleep with his pastor for such a period of time and keep quite only to say it now.mazuvaano nenyaya dze rape dzawanda kudai vanhu vavakungoti andirepa even vanga vabvumirana to fix the other part becareful men these women are up to know good

Can someone define "rape"

lakota - 4 December 2013

Gumbura is cult leader and that's he uses fear and brain washes his followers. All the women that have reported their cases should be applauded for braving up against this evil pastor! To those that still follow him, l'm sure you have the same spirit of raping, abusing and are capable of being Cult leaders

Tunashe - 5 December 2013

This man should be castrated! Even animals are not that lustful! How can a man ever think he owns every woman that comes to attend church under his leadership. I really sympathize with all the ladies that were raped, manipulated or taken advantage of by this beast. If they are some women that have not yet reported that their cases, l hope they soon do. This man should never. Ever walk the streets again!
