Hats off to Mbada Diamonds

HARARE - The 2013 Zimbabwe Premiership season had a befitting end at the weekend with the Mbada Diamonds Cup final between Highlanders and How Mine.

After agonisingly losing the league title to Dynamos on goal difference, Bosso finished off their season on a high with an emphatic 3-0 win over How Mine.

It was Highlanders’ first major silverware since winning the league in 2006 and the euphoria that engulfed Barbourfields Stadium at the final whistle tells the entire story.

Bosso smiled all the way to the bank as they pocketed a whooping $130 000 while How Mine received $90 000 and a further $110 000 subsidy to use in the African Confederation Cup all courtesy of the sponsors, Mbada Diamonds.

Zimbabwean football needs more corporate sponsors like Mbada Diamonds to help the game regain its former glitter.

Many clubs are struggling financially due to the critical cash flow problems that have  hit across all sectors of the Zimbabwean economy.

However, Mbada Diamonds has truly shown that a sponsor can go the extra mile and make sport a worthwhile adventure for clubs, players and the fans.

The diamond mining company paid for the travelling, accommodation, kits, appearance fees and players’ incentives costs for all the participating.

Without taking anything from the other competitions in the top flight, there is no doubt that the Mbada Diamonds Cup is the competition all teams are desperate to win.

Since its inception in 2011, the tournament has grown to become the premier knockout competition on the land.

This season  football fans also got the chance to watch their teams in action at a subsidised price of $1 per game including the final.

Stadia across the country were filled to the brim after this initiative by the sponsors as fans thronged in large numbers to watch their heroes in action.

Supporters are the owners of the game and this year they got a rare treat courtesy of the sponsors.

Mbada’s generosity did not only end there as the company also went a step further by donating various items to the underprivileged members of the society in all areas where the tournament was hosted.

The local game now has a good foundation with the coming on board of Mbada Diamonds, Delta Beverages and BancABC as main sponsors of the three main competitions.

It is our hope that the three continue with the good work they have done so far and there is always room for them to improve on the funding they have already availed to the local game.

Econet should come aboard also. Mbada should sponsor the league and Castle the knockout tournament. Econet ndaipinde apa next year tirkuida
