UN gives Zim $430m

HARARE - Zimbabwe has received $430 million from the United Nations this year, making it one of the biggest beneficiaries in Africa.

This was said by the UN resident representative Alain Noudehou to the 2013 Zimbabwe United Nations Development Assistance Framework (Zundaf) high level annual review meeting held in Harare yesterday.

Noudehou said Zimbabwe received  $426 million last year.

“In 2013,with continued financial support from all development partners, the UN agencies are expected to deliver approximately $430 million by year-end,” Noudehou said.

“This effectively makes the UN programme in Zimbabwe one of the biggest in Africa and it also speaks volumes of our collective engagement and commitment.”

Noudehou said the programme caters for the provision of quality social services, good governance for sustainable development, food security, agriculture as well as HIV and Aids and gender equality.

“Despite our efforts, the economic recovery remains fragile, unemployment remains high, particularly among the youth and HIV and Aids remains high although improving,” he said.

Ray Ndhlukula, deputy chief secretary to the President and Cabinet, said government was committed to continued partnership with the UN agency to espouse globally agreed goals such as MGDs.

“Government appreciates the role played by the UN and its development agencies in fostering national development and we as government will continue to lend them the necessary support,” Ndhlukula said.

The review was aimed at allowing stakeholders to determine how best to implement Zundaf in support of evolving national priorities as a monitoring and evaluation strategy.
