2013 Soccer Stars selected

HARARE – Harare City’s Silas Songani is in the running to be crowned the 2013 Castle Premiership Soccer Star of the Year after he was named amongst the 11 finalists in the running for the award on Saturday.

The Soccer Stars selection meeting was held yesterday in the capital with members of the media, PSL coaches and players representatives all voting for different categories.

Songani has been one of the stand out performers in the Premiership with his captivating performances which have helped City shoot to the top of the log standings with only one game to go before the season ends.

Although he is suspended for this afternoon’s match, Songani will be main factor if City go onto to win their maiden top flight league title in only their second season in the Premiership.

The awards banquet will be held on December 13 at a venue to be yet announced.

Songani is likely to face stiff competition for the award from the 2012 Castle Premiership Rookie of the Year, Kuda Mahachi of Chicken Inn, who was also voted amongst the best 11 players yesterday.

Mahachi has been a revelation for the Gamecocks this season with some scintillating performances down the left wing.

The league’s leading goal scorer Tendai Ndoro also from Chicken Inn is another top contender for the Soccer Star gong after he made the top XI team.

Ndoro, who is on loan from South African Premiership side Mpumalanga Black Aces, currently has 18 goals and has already set his sights on winning the Golden Boot award with 20 goals.

The other players who made the Soccer Star list include Highlanders shot stopper Munyaradzi Diya, FC Platinum’s forward Charles Sibanda, and Eric Chipeta of Hwange.

Ageless Mernard Mupera whose rock steady presence in the heart of giant killers How Mine midfield was deservedly rewarded as he also made the list together with Hardlife Zvirekwi of CAPS United.

Defending champions Dynamos have provided three players on the list namely midfielder Tawanda Muparati, goalkeeper George Chigova and defender Gift Bello.

Chigova and Black Rhinos goalkeeper Herbert Rusawo are also in the running for the Castle Premiership Goalkeeper of the Year.

The panellists also voted for the Most Promising Player of the Year but the winner will only be announced together with that of Coach of the Year on the day of the banquet.

Delta Beverages marketing manager, Patricia Murambinda said the voting process was one of the most flawless she has witnessed in years.

“It has been a flawless event,” she said. “And that’s what we want as sponsors. We are excited about how this season has turned out.

“Tomorrow (today) the trophy will be in a helicopter stationed between Barbourfields Stadium, Rufaro Stadium and the National Sports Stadium. It will be a photo finish.”
