City's date with destiny

HARARE - Harare City coach Bigboy Mawiwi is not getting ahead of himself before his side’s date with destiny tomorrow.

City head into their final game of a remarkable season against CAPS United on Sunday as the hot favourites to win the Castle Premiership title, ending Dynamos’ two-year dominance.

Victory over the Green Machine will be enough to secure a first league crown since their promotion into the top flight league two years ago, and many feel the club could dominate for years to come.

It has now become a case of merely holding their nerves to complete the job.

Mawiwi, who guided the Sunshine Boys into the Premiership two years ago, is also excited about the future but is putting all thoughts of that aside to concentrate on the present.

“First and foremost we thank God for taking us this far. Very few were giving us a chance at the beginning of the year,” Mawiwi told the Daily News yesterday.

“This is the moment everyone has been waiting for. We are all excited.

“They worked hard all the season to be where we are today. They fought every game and in this championship that is very hard. Now they have a big chance.

“I have been telling the guys to relax. We are approaching this match the same way as the other games that we have played all season. We don’t want to put ourselves under unnecessary pressure.”

Asked how they will approach the CAPS game, Mawiwi said: “We want to collect maximum points but we have all due respect for CAPS United. They are a big team and they play good football. They will definitely not make it easy for us. The good thing is the boys know what is needed.”

Mawiwi has attributed their success this season to hard work and support from the executive.

“We have worked hard to be where we are today. Our executive led by chairman Leslie Gwindi has been very supportive. They made our work very simple. We now want to clear this final hurdle.”

Harare City will be missing their kingpin, Warriors midfielder Silas Songani who is suspended after accumulating six yellow cards.
