Zim earns research medal

HARARE - Zimbabwe has received the 2013 Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Education (SACMEQ) research medal.

The medal, which was extended to the government in Paris, is a bi-annual award to persons, organisations or institutions deemed to have made outstanding contributions to SACMEQ research and training programmes.

Lazarus Dokora, minister of Primary and Secondary Education, said though Zimbabwe has been acknowledged in the region for good quality education, there was need to deal with educational challenges in the country.

“The 2013 SACMEQ research medal, presented to the minister at the 9th session of the assembly of SACMEQ ministers, represents the United Nations and Africa’s recognition of Zimbabwe’s pole position in providing quality education underpinned by research.

“The award should not obscure the several challenges in education,” he said.

Dokora said his ministry was seized with restructuring education in keeping with the spirit of the 1999 Commission of Inquiry into education and training.

Among the things that needed attention were classrooms, a good teaching work force and workshops for teachers.

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has in that regard planned an infrastructure expo and conference on November 29 and 30.

“We want to look at ways we can modify housing for teachers in rural areas,” he said.

Honourable minister, I think we need to reconsider the recommendations of the Nziramasanga Commission made some 14 years ago. The context in which the recommendations were made has changed tremendously and the assumptions used in making the same have now adequately played out.
