“US willing to support Zim"

GWERU - US Ambassador Bruce Wharton says his country will continue making efforts to offer support with absolutely no strings attached to the aid granted, contrary to assertions that this is an attempt to thaw frosty diplomatic ties.

Wharton’s response comes when some sections of the government have expressed dismay towards US aid to needy Zimbabweans saying the country was dangling a “vanity carrot” to lure President Robert Mugabe to the table to discuss the two countries’ frosty relations.

Speaking to the media on the side-lines of an event to mark the launch of Naletale Monument Restoration Project held at the Military Museum in Gweru on Wednesday evening, the ambassador said US aid was driven by willingness of Americans to support Zimbabwe.

“We have a long record of supporting Zimbabwe. Where support is concerned we want Zimbabwe to prosper,” Ambassador Wharton said.

He said the US had set modalities to model an integral supporting system for Zimbabwe as a way of largely promoting growth and called for patience among locals.

so requires patience to see the economy grow. It is unfair to expect an immediate turn-around of the economy. It takes some time,”  the US diplomat noted.

He said US supports the IMF and Zimbabwe working on a staff monitoring programme, which will essentially help Zimbabwe build a rational economic plan.

US continues to make concerted efforts to meaningfully contribute to the livelihood of every ordinary Zimbabwean and maintain Washington-Harare relations, Wharton said.

He said his country’s was contributing an additional $10 million towards mitigating starvation threatening some 2,2 million Zimbabwean people during the October 2013 to 2014 March hunger season as projected by the World Food Programme (WFP).

In total, the US Government has contributed $25 million to WFP for this year’s humanitarian food operation, which will provide food for approximately 1.8 million of the most food insecure people in Zimbabwe.
