MDC slaps Ian Kay with 5-year suspension

HARARE - Ian Kay, former Marondera MDC MP, faces a long winter in political wilderness after the MDC imposed a five-year ban on him for suggesting that Morgan Tsvangirai should resign.

Kay, who along with senior party officials such as exiled treasurer-general Roy Bennett have called for leadership renewal to allow the ex-majority party to reinvent itself, was first suspended by the party’s Mashonaland East provincial executive pending a hearing.

The hearing was finally conducted this week where a verdict to suspend Kay for five years was reached amid claims by his sympathisers that the decision would be annulled by the national executive as the province has no power to discipline a fellow provincial member.

Kay however, confirmed the suspension but said he wanted to look at the party’s constitution first to check if the province did not break the law.

“It is true I have been suspended by the province after I appeared before the disciplinary committee last week,” Kay said.

“I think the province has got the power to suspend me but I am not quite sure. I will only be able to make my next move when I get the facts right.”

Nelson Chamisa, the party’s organising secretary and spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora were unreachable for comment.

But Graham Nyahada, provincial spokesperson, insisted it was within the province’s mandate to suspend a fellow provincial executive council member.

Nyahada however, admitted the province had no power to expel a member saying such a decision had to be approved by the party’s national executive council first.

“We decided as a province to suspend Kay for five years for the comments he made to the press which we feel was at variance with what is expected of our members especially in the top echelons of the party like him,” he said.

“He will however, effectively serve three-and-a-half years only as the other one and half years were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.”

Kay likened Tsvangirai’s leadership to a rusty bolt which needed to be replaced.

Last week, ex-Energy minister and national executive member Elias Mudzuri threw his hat into the ring indicating that he was ready to take over from the former Prime Minister after his term expires in 2016.

The Mashonaland East MDC-T provincial committee is a committee of fools. Ian Kay never mentioned anyone's name in his criticism so how can he be punished for criticizing a nameless figure? In any case, the party is not a private property of Tsvangirai and his gregarious gossip-loving friends. This move surely helps to destroy the party as it reveals a leadership that detests constructive criticism.

There is no difference between Zanu and MDC. If you say Mugabe must go you are arrested and if you also say Tsvangison must go you are suspended. I thought MDC was rule of the people by the people. This goes to show that Save is not prepared to pass on the button to someon anytime soon. I forsee another party coming out of the MDC T. In all fairness Tsvangison must go, he has been on that position for more than 17 years so it is time for Chamisa to lead the part. Save should just be an advisor and should concentrate on mobilising party members since he claims to be the face of MDC. otherwise interms of leadership he ranks low.

Ayas, ZanuPf ne MdC zvakangofanana, I think Zimbabwe needs a more democratic political party, not MDC, with this kind of operating? I tell you, MDC will never rule this country

MDC T is beginning to make itself unpopular for these unwise decisions of suspending party members for trivial offences. Petty squables will definitely bring down MDC T. MDC Tleadership is now behaving like the unpopular ZANU PF dictators and oppressors of people. If MDC T leadership is now showing us their true colours of intolerance of critisism, then it is time for us, the staunch supporters of MDC T, to re-think about our support to the MDC T party. Suspending a party member for criticising Tsvangirayi is not the way forward for any party , but a sign of bad things to come. This move of suspending party members from the party for criticising Tsvangirayi means the MDC T party is undemocratic but dictators in waiting. Instead of dumping party members for trivial offences, MDC T leadership should sit down quietly, with the offending members and discipline them to behave in accordance to what the MDC T party wants their members to behave within the party. MDC T leadership should be tolerent of critisism from other party members and be aware that we, the staunch MDC T supporters, will be watching every bad move and bad decisions that the party leadership will doing and we will not keep quiet if there is a bad move in the party's decisions. MDC T becareful of becoming dictators in waiting. If you the MDC T party leadership become dictators in waiting , the masses will dump you like a hot potato, so be aware and practice democracy and practice tolerence of criticism and do the right moves for the future of the party's survival ! ! !

The problem is not Tsvangirai or MDC or ZANU!Its has to do with us as Zimbabweans. Look KuDynamos or Highlanders or Caps team ikarohwa because of poor administration like salaries for example its the coach 's problem. No its not. How can someone who has never ruled the country be lined to a dictator. Give him time and until he becomes president let him rule for at most 2 terms and afterwhich comparisons can be made. Until he becomes a president of the country lets start then to assess but until then the vision is to be elected into office nothing else....

What's wrong with asking for leadership renewal? Sacking people for suggesting democratic means of renewal is no different from Zanu where bootlicking is the only credential you need to succeed. Stay strong Mr. Kay we support voices of reason.

The party is absolutely right letting indiscipline of this nature to go unpunished is only sending wrong signals. There no where on eartyh where a political party worth its salt can let its members wash dirty linen in public. If this guy Kay had a genuine issue he knows the protocol.Even in ZANU there are heated debates in the politubro only for Rugare Gumbo to emerge smiling addressing journalists as if all is well. The same should happen only Mwonzora has the mandate to speech on behalf of the party. Dzidzai kubva pamuwonde even if its true there is war in ZANUPF currently the party portrays a picture of a united unity ndiko kugona ka.That Tsvangirai should go or remain can only be addressed behind closed doors not through the press.Thats how the party can remain relevant.

You want Save to go? That's bad assumptions because he hasn't rule the country yet and the main issue is that he won all the elections against ZANU but rigging is the main twig on the eye. MDC people you are always fooled by ZANU pf because you have eyes but you don't see. The problem is not Save but is rigging or change of the voting systems. Even though you put an Engel from heaven they will rig and win because they are the Engels of the devil. Tsvangirai haana kwaanoenda kana pasati paitwa feye pamaelestions neZanu, Never never never.

Suspending Ian is tragic for the party in Mash East. Ian had more votes than all competing MDC candidates in the province Marondera Central(7,892). Since the formation of the party he has been deeply involved in party organisation, fund raising, mobilisation, assisting victims that to us the party supporters in Mash East. Surely criticising the party leader if that is my feeling should not be a crime. This shows that Tsvangirai over the years has evolved into another Mugabe. He thinks that the party is his and his alone. Ian Kay, Bennett, Mudzuri have been with the party for a very long time and they deserve respect for their opinions. Save is now beheving like Egdar Tekere. His party died a natural death because anybody who criticised him faced the chop. Some of us reside in the rural areas and tanzwa noku sveveredzwa navanhu ve Zanu. These people have literally been urinating on us for the past 17 years. Tsvangirai has not tried hard enough to remove them. Hee ndakabirwa election bla blah blah, where were you when the elections were stolen. Now we know that Tsvangirai did not go into government to solve you and me's problems, but to solve his own problems. The people of Zimbabwe must also know that the Tsvangirais, Chamisas and Bitis of this world had nothing going into government and politics. These people have been successful and are comfortable remaining in oposition for the rest of their lives. The silence of Biti is very worrying. He has to make is voice known because some of us had at some ponit considered him a potential candidate to challenge for the leadership. His silence to us makes his appear to be a coward or an opportunist who wants to do battle when the ground has been cleared by others. This makes Mudzuri a front runner in the fight to topple Tsvangirai. With his impecable background of running civic affairs as mayor in the capital and his nonsense approach he clearly has our support

I have no problem with people with ambition to lead MDC this is to be expected in any democratic party. However I,ve a problem when unpopular people who are rejected by their own constituency attempts to take over the leadership of a political party like MDC. On the other hand this should be a wake up call to Tsvangirai and his top associates who imposed an unpopular candidate like Mudzuri to Warren Park constituency. The people protested before elections and it fell on deaf ears. Mudzuri won not because of his popularity but people voted for the seat to go to the party. It is common knowledge the MDC like ZANU imposed a lot of unpopular candidates and the leadership knows it. I challenged Tsvangirai to talk about this during his meet the people tour. ZANU,s win is not only the result of riging but Mdc leadership also contributed in the defeat in the elections. The problem with MDC leadership was that of taking people for granted
