Student arrested for Mugabe insult

MASVINGO - A Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) student got himself in trouble for allegedly calling President Robert Mugabe a dog because he was failing to fullfill his election campaign promises.

Honest Makasi, 34, of Majange high density suburb, was on Wednesday hauled before Masvingo magistrate Dorothy Mwanyisa facing charges of insulting the president.

Makasi is facing charges of violating a section of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act by publicly undermining the authority of the presidency.

The GZU student becomes the second person from the same institution to insult the president after lecturer, ChenjeraI Pamhirwa.

Prosecutor James Nyamapfeni told the court that on September 14 this year at Majange Business Centre, Makasi, who was in the company of his friends shouted that “President Mugabe imbwa haasi kukwanisa kuita zvaakataura pamacampaign ainyepera vanhu” (President Mugabe is a dog, failing to do what he promised during campaigns and had lied to the people.)

He was reported to the police by some alleged Zanu PF supporters.

Makasi, who is represented by Martin Mureri of Matutu, Kwirira and Associates, denied the charge.

In his line of defence, Mureri said Makasi was an active member of the MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai and was being victimised for campaigning for his party during the run-up to the July 31 polls.

He was remanded to November 11 for trial.

Since the July 31 harmonised polls over 10 people in the province have been arrested and dragged to court for insulting the president.

We are a sick nation. One man insults others and nothing happens. Another man insults him and he is arrested. We all stand equal before God. God is the ultimate authority.

Where in the world will you insult a sitting President and get away with it. Try to insult your CEO where you work and see what happens

A father leads by example. Baba vakanwa doro vachiraradza what do you expect of the children? Baba vakatuka vavakidzani what do you expect of the children? What does the nation benefit from all those insults the President throws around like confetti? Think again Zimbabweans. What kind of nation do we want for our children. We need to respect one another despite differences.

Obama Bin Laden - 4 November 2013

Why? Why? No employment, poor health, climate changes challenges etc. But quick to act on some flimsy insult on that greedy, selfish old man who want to die on power as if he is better that everyone else. Does an insult kill him? Please use time and effort wisely other than arresting people for petty issues.

This madness confirms the claim that the African leadership has betrayed the continent. If Mugabe is not a liability, why is Zimbabwe so poor amidst affluence? Kuchazova riniko ?

I thought that law was thrown out, until the Minister convinces the courts this law is a nullity and the Magistrate should know better. Mugabe has never fulfilled any election promise so why worry. We are used and people voted kunyeperwa ikoko vachitoziva kuti kunyepa iye zvino vavekungoti Tsvangirayi kwa TB Joshua as if that will solve the problem we have at the moment. Mahwani.

bob himself calls his opponents all sorts of names . who does he think he is ? at 90 he is too old and not fit to rule . this is not an insult but a fact . he lied to civil servants that he would raise their salaries .

CREMORA - 4 November 2013

But this law was ruled unconstitutional only a few days ago. Why would a magistrate continue to rule on a case which has been decided before already?
