Mandela not ill, just old: Sexwale

JOHANNESBURG - Former president Nelson Mandela is no longer ill, African National Congress stalwart Tokyo Sexwale said yesterday.

“Madiba says of his health, ‘I am not ill, I’m just old,” Sexwale told reporters at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton, north of Johannesburg.

No further details were given about his health.

Sexwale was speaking at the briefing about the film, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

He described the movie, produced by film-maker Anant Singh, as “the movie of all movies”.

“Anant’s movie epitomises and captures the history of our people... It captures the titanic of struggles.

“It is a career-changing movie,” Sexwale told the cast.

Singh told reporters that he had shown Mandela snippets of the film and pictures of some of the scenes at his home in Qunu after production had ended last year.

He said Mandela found it amusing.

Singh said the anti-apartheid icon asked him “Is this me?” when looking at a picture from a scene where Elba was wearing one of the famous Madiba shirts and was sporting grey hair and an ageing face from the make-up.

Zindzi Mandela told reporters the film was therapeutic and that she wished she had watched it alone.

“His (Singh) ability to summarise so many moments (in our lives) was incredible.

“It is extremely well executed and sincere,” Zindzi said.

She watched the film with Singh, her mother Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and her husband.

The film would be released in South Africa on November 28.
