Macheso, Rebels clash in Mutare

HARARE - Sungura kingpin Alick Macheso and Extra Kwazvose, a band made  up of his ex-band members, have both lined up shows in Mutare on Saturday.

Extra Kwazvose, composed of dancer/lead vocalist Francis “Franco Slomo” Dhaka, drummer Obert Gomba, Congolese chanter Kasamba and lead guitarist Noel Nyazanda, will be performing in the Eastern border town for the first time since they broke away from Macheso six months ago.

While the “rebels” will be entertaining revellers at Murapa Tavern, their ex-boss Macheso will be performing at his regular hunting ground at Pick n Save popularly known as paMupfumi.

William Tsandukwa, who manages Macheso’s Orchestra Mberikwazvo, says there is no rivalry at all with Extra Kwazvose.

“It is unfortunate that there will be competition between us,” said Tsandukwa.

“In fact, we were not aware that Extra Kwazvose had also arranged a show in Mutare on Saturday.

“If we had known about it we would have gone to Mutare on a different day because we don’t want to create the impression that we are deliberately out to undermine them because we have a stronger crowd-pulling capacity.”

John Murira, the Extra Kwazvose manager, told the Daily News yesterday that his band is relishing the Mutare gig on the same day with the popular Tafadzwa singer.

“This is our first concert in Mutare, so fans are waiting for us curiously.

“With a musician of Macheso’s calibre also in the city, I think it is a perfect chance for us to show that we now have a fairly big fan base,” said Murira.

The Extra Kwazvose manager added that contrary to the grapevine, his band has enormous respect for Macheso.

“If an opportunity presents itself, we would like to share the stage with him (Macheso) because fans are looking forward to such a great show,” said Murira.

While Extra Kwazvose has just a single album called Ndizvo Zviripo to its name, Macheso boasts of nine albums.

The gifted vocalist and bassist’s discography includes the albums Kwatakabva Mitunhu (Kure Kwekure), Zvinoda Kutendwa, Ndezvashe-eh Vapupuri Pupurai, Zvido Zvenyu Kunyanya, Zvakanaka Zvakadaro, Simbaradzo, Vakiridzo and Pakutema Munda.
