Envoy abandons position for Zanu PF provincial post

HARARE - John Mvundura, the acting Zanu PF Manicaland provincial chairman, has ditched his diplomatic post in Cuba to lead the party’s provincial structure in the eastern capital.

Mvundura was appointed Zanu PF Manicaland chairperson in the run-up to the July 31 polls after the ruling party’s provincial leadership was rocked with a power struggle that ended in the courts.

Joey Bimha, secretary for Zimbabwe’s Foreign Affairs ministry, confirmed to the Daily News on Sunday that Cuba does not have a Zimbabwean ambassador at the moment, with Mvundura’s deputy currently acting as ambassador.

“We are waiting for President (Robert) Mugabe to make a decision on that and ambassador Mvundura is still here,” Bimha said.

Mugabe has the prerogative to recall and appoint an ambassador who will represent Zimbabwe and safeguard the country’s interests.

Mvundura, as things stand, might not be going back to Cuba anytime soon as he is reportedly  eyeing the Zanu PF provincial chairmanship in the forthcoming provincial election.

He is likely to battle it out against Monica Mutsvangwa for the Zanu  PF party’s provincial top seat.

According to Zanu PF insiders, Mvundura wants to win the Manicaland chairmanship then return to his diplomatic post in Havana. Mvundura is said to be a close ally of  Didymus Mutasa.

Zimbabwean students on a government scholarship in Cuba claimed that they were suffering while their “father” is away.

The students claimed that they are living like “street kids” in the prolonged absence of the envoy.

But the politically displaced diplomat said he did not know any “Zimbabwean students in Cuba who have been reduced to destitutes, living like street kids because of delays in paying their stipends” while he is back home.
