All-female gospel concert set for Byo

BULAWAYO - Leading City of Kings songstresses have organised an-all-female gospel concert at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre on November 9.

The talented female gospel artistes, who will take part in the Women Gospel Artistes Concert, include Joyce Mungofa, Mai Mangwiro, Abigail Mwembe, Xolani Mlangeni and Thobekile Nleya.

The quintet is confident that the concert will go a long way in reviving interest in gospel music in Bulawayo.

“We have created a platform for us to be recognised in our own hometown,” Mwembe told the Daily News in Bulawayo early this week.

“The Bulawayo music industry has been almost lifeless for a long time. Some artistes have left for Harare and neighbouring countries in search of exposure and better opportunities."

“The theme for the concert is “Bulawayo Arise” because it is high time artistes in Bulawayo rise to the occasion and do bigger and better things,” added the gospel singer.

The Tata Leza singer said the Women Gospel Artistes Concert was crucial in an environment which offers limited opportunities for the gospel genre.

“Most arts festivals rarely accommodate gospel musicians resulting in gospel artistes not getting enough exposure,” said Mwembe.

Though the main focus of the November 9 concert is on women, Mwembe said men should come in huge numbers to lend their support to the five women musician’s “worthy cause.”

To spice up the event, several performers who include Vocal X, Dumie Nyongolo and Mpumelelo Shining Stars, will also take part in the concert.
