$28 000 ivory seized

HARARE - An Asian national was yesterday arrested at the Harare International Airport for illegal possession of ivory, Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority confirmed yesterday.

The Asian national is 34 years old and is a truck driver in his country of origin.

He was found with 17 raw pieces of ivory and several worked ivory which included bangles, chop sticks and beads weighing 113.9kg valued at approximately $28 250.

He intended to board an Ethiopian Airline destined for Malaysia.

Caroline Washaya-Moyo, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority public relations manager commended the “cordial working relations that exists with other law enforcement agencies at our various ports of entry and exit who continue to work tirelessly in order to curb incidences of smuggling of wildlife products.”

She stressed that the current seizure and arrest should send the proper message to would be offenders.

This person should be given the maximum available sentence. I would be very disappointed if he gets a more lenient sentence than the villagers in Matebeleland, if anything his is worse because he is involved in organized crime at the highest level.
