Mangwiro rules out title chances

HARARE – Taurai Mangwiro ruled out CAPS United’s title chances after watching his side go down 4-1 to a spirited Black Mambas side at Morris Depot on Saturday.

United were outplayed by the police outfit especially in the first half and failed to mount a comeback in the second half as they missed a glut of chances that came their way.

“We are basically out of the race now. We should have picked up the points today (yesterday) but we have ourselves to blame,” Mangwiro said after the game.

“The team didn’t play as we would have loved and its football because we beat the same team 4-1 in the reverse fixture but it was their turn today.”

With five games to go before the curtain comes down on the season, United remained in fifth position with 39 points. They now trail leaders Highlanders by five points.

Going into yesterday’s match, Makepekepe had the chance to close the gap on fourth-placed FC Platinum but they dropped three crucial points that put a severe dent in their title quest.

And Mangwiro admitted in his post-match interview that his side had let slip a good chance to win their first league title in 8 years.

“We shouldn’t bank on other teams to do the job for us. We had the chance to make the job easier for ourselves but today’s loss is one of those games were you have to give credit to your opponent. We are now looking forward to our next match against How Mine,” Mangwiro said.

CAPS were also paired with How Mine in the semifinals of the Mbada Diamonds Cup which will be played on the weekend of November 9-10.

While Makepekepe were left licking their wounds, Warumwa Warumwa were left celebrating as they eased their relegation woes by picking up three crucial points to move to a 32-point tally.

The police side is now five points clear of 13th-placed Black Rhinos, who clash with log-leaders Highlanders at Rimuka Stadium this afternoon.

Another relegation haunted side, Hwange also did themselves a huge favour in their quest for survival by beating Chicken Inn 2-1 at Luveve Stadium yesterday.
