Senior cop denies plotting to nail Komichi

HARARE - MDC chief elections officer Morgen Komichi’s lawyer Alec Muchadehama yesterday alleged Zimbabwe Electoral Commission and CID chief superintendent Crispen Makedenge connived to formulate charges against him.

Makedenge was testifying in the matter in which Komichi is accused of fraud and contravening the Electoral Act.

Muchadehama questioned why Makedenge, who is the highest in command, had been assigned to deal with Komichi’s case.

Muchadehama said it was a simple case of fraud that could have been assigned to his subordinates.

Makedenge denied having political agendas in dealing with the issue and said he acted independently.

“I am still a serving Zimbabwe Republic Police officer and if I am asked to investigate anything, I will do so. It is an internal issue and we were acting independently and Zec was not telling us what to do,” said Makedenge.

Prosecutor Michael Mugabe has so far led six witnesses in the case.

Muchadehama claims Zec failed to handle the July election process, resulting in some ballot papers going missing.

Allegations are that on July 25 at HICC, Komichi approached Tendayi Pamire asking to have an audience with Zec chairperson Justice Rita Makarau after a ballot envelope was found in a rubbish bin outside the command centre.

State alleges that Komichi accused Zec of destroying ballot papers of members of the uniformed forces who voted for the Morgan Tsvangirai-led MDC.

According to State papers, the envelope belonged to Constable Mugove Chiginya, a police officer supposed to have voted for the MDC in the Southerton Constituency.

The court heard that Chiginya, however failed to vote during the special voting period.

His trial continues today.
