Chivhu man up for murdering son

HARARE - A Chivhu man has been hauled before the High Court, for allegedly murdering his 21-year-old son using a log, before tying his legs and attempting to take him to a prophet in Harare.

Amon Vambe, who is appearing before High Court Judge Hlekani Mwayera on murder charges, is jointly charged with his nephew Tendai Mupakwa.

The two are accused of murdering Desmond Vambe, whom Amon, suspected was not his biological son, after the death of his wife.

According to court papers, the two came home one day in October 2010 and accused Desmond of having burnt the fields and broke windows of their house.

Desmond started running away and the duo gave a spirited chase, before catching up with him.

They allegedly assaulted him using a log all over his body, leading to his death.

Amon denied intentionally killing his son, claiming that he was disciplining him.

According to Amon’s mother Chanzini Vambe, she said she saw the duo carrying Desmond, before assaulting him.

“The accused then took a rope with which they bound deceased’s legs and placed him in a vehicle and drove away. They later returned but the deceased was unconscious,” Chanzini told the court, adding that she discovered Desmond had died.  According to court papers, a post mortem showed Desmond died due to cerebral haemorrhage.

The matter was postponed to today after the investigating police officer failed to turn up for proceedings.
