Tuku descends on Gweru

BULAWAYO - Music legend Oliver“Tuku” Mtukudzi will hold a rare family show in Gweru at Musopero Liquid Lounge on Sunday as part of his 61st birthday celebrations.

Tuku was honoured on September 27 in a tribute bash featuring leading local and foreign musicians.

The international musicians who graced the Bvuma hit-maker’s moment of honour included South African jazz star Judith Sephuma, the Kenyan duo of Eric Wainaina and Suzanna Awiyo, South Africa’s Hugh Masekela and Steve Dyer.

In Sunday’s show —Tuku’s last in the Midlands capital city this year — the internationally-revered music legend will share the stage with high-riding Jah Prayzah.

Gweru has proved to be a good hunting ground for the popular Jah Prayzah who recently released a DVD album for his latest album Tsviriyo.

Show organiser Tafadzwa Maridadi of Maridadi Promotions is optimistic that the highly-anticipated show will live up to its billing.

“We decided to turn the show into a family one so that all people who have  been waiting to see these artistes live on stage can get this rare opportunity during the day,” said Maridadi.

“We have not forgotten children in this as we have put in place jumping castles, face painting as well as photo-shoots with their beloved musicians.”

In the spirit of celebrating the iconic Tuku’s 61st birthday, the show organisers have prepared a treat for Midlands State University students.

“As this is an extension of Tuku’s birthday celebration in Gweru, Midlands State University students who will bring their identity cards will get a free copy of Jah Prayzah’s latest album Tsviriyo,” said the Maridadi Promotions director.
