PSL heading for exciting climax

BULAWAYO – This year’s Castle Premiership league season looks set for an explosive finish as the leading pack remains bunched up at the summit of the log with seven matches left in the programme.

The top three, Dynamos, Highlanders and Harare City all picked up a single point at the weekend after playing out draws.

Log leaders Dynamos were held to a goalless draw by Monomotapa at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday while second placed Highlanders had to come from behind to force a 1-1 draw against Buffaloes at Sakubva on the same day and on Saturday Harare City drew one all with Chicken Inn.

This allowed FC Platinum to position themselves as one of the top four teams with the brightest prospects of lifting the league title after their 3 – 1 away victory over Tripple B at Dulibadzimu.

Defending champions Dynamos are on 42 points while second placed Highlanders and third placed Harare City are tied on 41 points with Bosso on top because of a superior goal difference.

Platinum moved into fourth place with 39 points to their credit and in fifth place there is Caps United, who are tied on 36 points with sixth placed Chicken Inn.

Both United and Chicken Inn are still in with a chance but the Green Machine’s title challenge is now doubtful after they lost their head coach Taurai Mangwiro who resigned after their 3-1 away loss to Shabanie Mine citing difficult working conditions.

Speaking after his side’s match against Harare City on Saturday, Chicken Inn coach Mandla Mpofu expressed confidence that his team can overtake the pacesetters and lift the league title.

“A lot of things can happen in the last seven matches and there are just six points between us and the log leaders so any team in the top six can go on to win it at the end of the season,” Mpofu said.

Player depth is likely to determine which team walks away with the title this season as fatigue has certainly become a factor since the majority of the championship contenders save for Platinum are still in contention for the Mbada Diamonds Cup which continues this coming weekend.
