MPs demand diplomatic passports

HARARE - Members of Parliament have demanded diplomatic passports from government, ostensibly because the special travel document would enhance their status as honourable members.

The MPs said the issuance of the diplomatic passports would enable them to carry out their duties more efficiently when travelling outside the country on Parliament business.

Gift Chimanikire, an MDC MP, tabled the request yesterday during an induction workshop in Harare, saying in the event that government failed to provide them with passports, they were going to introduce a motion in the National Assembly.

“It is standard practice worldwide that MPs are given diplomatic passports, that equivalent to their status in the society,” Chimanikire said.

“I approached the Foreign Affairs minister in the last Parliament session as chairman of the welfare committee and he told me that they are too many MPs and the government cannot cater for everyone.
“But we feel that we need to revisit the matter again so that we can get diplomatic passports similar to what is happening to our other colleagues in the Sadc region.

“The image and our status as MPS are not being recognised, we must be assisted with diplomatic passports.

As I travelled to South Africa on Parliament business, I was treated like a criminal despite producing my ID card. Something must be done to equal our social standing."

Anthony Malunga, principal director for human resources and administration of Parliament, agreed to take up the matter with presiding officers and help the MPs to secure the diplomatic passports.

MPs have made several demands to government including twin cab vehicles, a salary of at least $3 000  and sitting allowances.

The MPs have also approached the Harare City Council for residential stands in the low density areas.

this idiots are not thinking about development they are thinking of their cross border business and they don't want to pay duty and then compete with ordinary people who pay duty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Zimbabweans this is why I say it is not worth dying for zanu or mdc or even hating another ordinary Zimbabwean because they support a deferent party because at the end of the day these MP'S are on the same side not on team Zim but on """""""""""team Dollar"""""""" sadly only chinoz is truly a person for the people hope he wont join these corrupt mps (zanu&mdc)

Makudo aya ngemamwe. Zimbabwe will not change with these people. Whites steal but not to this extent. At least with them you see tangible things like good roads, well planned houses in towns, better schools ... but with our own brown (I don't want to say black people because we are working on this issue, black will be called brown people soon) people what you see is corruption, massive greediness, nepotism...

Isn't this a shame, I completely agree with you Zimdollar, what an abomination. Zimbabweans are dying of hunger, lack of medicine and proper healthcare, children are not being educated, society is crumbling, roads are now like dry streams, etc, and the first thing tabled in Parliament is diplomatic passports!!!! really... kiss the blackest part of my ass.... you fools. What makes it worse is the fact that this is being proposed by MDC members, they too are in it to look bid, feel important and loot whatever they can get their dirty hands on and not risk being searched or pay taxes on the border. Zimbabwe is gonna be a perpetual laughing stock of the world. Next thing is we are going to hear that they want a salary raise because of how important and what a good job they are doing....

It would be interesting to see the reaction of Minister Mumbengegwi on this one. "Tauraika tinzwe Dhehwa, Bvumawaranda" do you think the country will be well served by giving these undiplomatic, ungroomed bunch of people Diplomatic Passports?

Naison Nyereyegona - 3 October 2013

These people who think being a chosen official now means you are superior to every other citizen make me seek! You are a servant of the people for goodness' sake. What status are you talking about? These politicians (both MDC and ZANU) are really nauseating!

Semhalo - 3 October 2013

These MPs, what a trashy lot! They think of personal priviledges before serving the people who are suffering in the country. What sort of people are these? They want diplomatic passports, pensions, higher salaries and allowances all the time. Don't they know the country is broke? Fools!

Chenjerai Hove - 3 October 2013

These MPS are all the same, none has the interests of suffering people at heart. Tz such a sad shame that they have shown their greed from the onset which just serves to prove that Zimbos are doomed for the next 5 years mbudzi idzi padzinenge dzichizvipfumisa. They r all in Parliament for the wrong reasons except for Cde. Chinoz who at least advocated for the non-selling of alcoholic beverages in the Members Bar during sessions.
