ZPC Kariba consolidate lead

HARARE – Tineyi Chitora’s second half strike was all ZPC Kariba needed as they stayed atop of the Zifa Northern Region division one league after dismissing JMC Academy in Shamva over the weekend.

The Kariba-based outfit top the log with 50 points from 24 games played while second placed Flame Lily is on 45 points.

Despite ZPC Kariba’s march towards promotion into the top flight league, coach Jostein Mathuthu is not getting carried away yet.

“I don’t think we can start talking of the championship now,” Mathuthu told the Daily News.

“There is still a lot of work to be done. This is a marathon and we can only look at the positions at the end of the race.

“We need to stay focused and concentrate on our game. We are now under pressure because as the log leaders everyone would want to beat us.

“I am happy with the performance of the team. They are fighting for each other and we hope to continue with that spirit to the end.

“Every match that we engage in from now will be like a cup final. We want to collect as many points as we can to stay on top position.”

ZPC Kariba who now boasts of some former Premiership players in their ranks, have a bright chance of promotion into the top flight league next season.

Former Dynamos striker Chitora and former CAPS United midfielder Pride Tafirenyika are some of the players who now turn out for the ZPC Kariba.

However, competition remains stiff in the league and it is promising to be a closely contested affair as all the top five teams are in the reckoning for promotion into the top fight.
