Hungwe, Dekeya qualify for SA Nationals

HARARE – Zimbabwean bodybuilders, Victor the “Beast” Hungwe and Irvine Dekeya have qualified for the South African Nationals to be held next weekend.

The two qualified for the competition after their good showing at the WPZ Chaz Classic at Wits University last week.

The two ranked among the country’s top athletes competed in the same category, the Under/90kg.

It was the former Musclemania winner, Hungwe who claimed the first position in the division and second overall.

Dekeya, a top 10 finalist at this year’s Musclemania contests, returned to South Africa exactly two years since participating at the same championships where he came third.

Hungwe is pursuing an international pro-card; his top priority that will enable him to compete on the world stage and believes his recent victory is work in progress towards attaining that goal.

“Competition was tight because we had guys who had done world qualifiers and some fresh from IFBB shows a week before, so it was a pretty tight contest,” Hungwe told the Daily News.

“International exposure makes me grow as an athlete and this victory is my first step in my quest to obtain a pro-card and I will have to work even harder.

“Most importantly my body stature at this show was vastly improved from Musclemania 2013 but I still need to work on my hamstrings and calf.”

After the South African championships both athletes will be back in the country to prepare for the Mr and Ms Zimbabwe contest scheduled for November 2.
