Mugabe sacrifices Masimirembwa

HARARE - President Robert Mugabe yesterday claimed Goodwills Masimirembwa, the former Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) chairman, tried to extort $6 million from Ghanaian investors.

Masimirembwa yesterday denied the allegations saying he is ready to explain to Mugabe the true facts of the matter.

Mugabe told a luncheon for lawmakers held at a Harare hotel, that the losing Zanu PF aspiring legislator for Mabvuku constituency, asked a Ghanaian mining firm with interest in gold production for a bribe to facilitate a joint venture deal.

Mugabe did not state when all this happened.

The 89-year-old Zanu PF leader, who has just been re-elected for a seventh five-year term is on an anti-corruption platform and indigenisation drive, claimed Masimirembwa threatened the Ghanaians with arrest if they ever set their foot in the country after reportedly spurning the lawyer-cum-politician’s demand.

The veteran leader said the Ghanaian investors approached his office for assistance, resulting in the disclosure of the alleged corruption.

Mugabe has a soft spot for Ghanaians, having completed his economics degree in Ghana in 1958, and also taught at St. Mary’s Teacher Training College, where he met his first wife, Sarah Heyfron, whom he would marry in 1961.

The former guerilla leader uncharacteristically railed against the ex-ZMDC boss, insisting he tried to extort cash from the Ghananians

“Masimirembwa, you got $6 million as bribe money from Ghanaian businesspeople and it is this we do not like and we do not want people who are corrupt,” Mugabe said in unusually direct remarks.

The Zanu PF leader said he will not allow the case to rest, hinting that there could be an imminent arrest.

Contacted by the Daily News, Masimimirembwa said: “I respect President Mugabe, he was speaking about what he was informed by his advisors but it seems the real people who were involved with this issue are the ones who misled him.

“When called upon to defend myself, I will do so and will reveal who was involved and how. I am clean on this matter am ready to explain to the nation and the President and I have the facts.”

To be honest, this is JUST THE SMALLEST TIP OF AN ICEBERG. The President should know this. When the anti-corruption wanted to do their job in earnest THEY, INSTEAD WERE ARRESTED and the President did not act(JUST AS IN MANY OTHER KNOWN CASES IN Zimbabwe). SUCH IN-ACTION FUELS CORRUPTION AT THE TOP AS IT IS INTEPRETED TO MEAN "YOU CAN DO IT". Corruption will not go if ONLY GHANAIANS ARE PROTECTED FROM IT !!!

gamimbo - 18 September 2013

Mugabe is amazing. Anoshamisa Mugabe. If he wants to show the country that he is against corruption then our dear president must be transparent and must ask each and every public figure of his government to declare their assets. Each one must account how they got their assets. Why is it always done to the little ones leaving the big ones roaming in the streets skinning our economy? Why the little Masimirembwa and not the Great Mpofu? Why the little police officer and not the Great Chuhuri? why the little councilor and not the Great Chombo? Why? Mr. President but why? Why is your wroth only on the little ones leaving the great ones doing as they wish? I am not saying Masimirembwa did great by stealing $6m but why not Mpofu also who stole and is stealing billions? Why? Reports say Mpofu owns the bulk of Victoria Falls and Mugabe never raised a finger on him. Why? Grace Mugabe stole land which was owned by Interfresh and you did nothing; why? Is Interfresh a foreign company subject to 51% share-ceding? Report also say Grace is taking some 21 000 hectares from a church somewhere in Harare and Mugabe is silent. Why? Why is it about the little ones when the great ones are doing worse things but remain untouched?? Could you please explain this to the people otherwise we will take you for an evil president. We want justice and fairness to all and the law must be applied to all from the least to the greatest. Your wife must not be immune to the law as she is a citizen of this country.

Why are the police hesitant in arresting this Masimirembwa guy ? Why did the minister arrange for a meeting between the parties, and why did the police attend ? How come the accused are still roaming free, even after Mugabe has demanded their arrest ? I suspect, it is because, Masimirembwa knows a lot more on who else has been corrupt. The chain of the corrupt goes all the way up.

Did you hear what Masimirembwa said? i quote "I respect President Mugabe, he was speaking about what he was informed by his advisors but it seems the real people who were involved with this issue are the ones who misled him". “When called upon to defend myself, I will do so and will reveal who was involved and how. I am clean on this matter am ready to explain to the nation and the President and I have the facts.” it shows the alleged corrupt event actually hapened but he is offering himself to name and shame the persons who were involved in the deal so as to make his name clean. if you are really clean and ethical as you purport Masimirembwa , why would you wait for the president to ask you? you should have disclosed it to the people of Zimbabwe or maybe the president himself that so and so are exhorting this and that for bribes. dai ukasungwa iwe , dai mukavharira zvakadai mutorongo

His threat to expose the big fish is like signing his own death warranty. Or he will just be asked for "evidence" and I can assure you he will not get the evidence anywhere. And that will be that!

My fellow Zimbabweans. Masimirembwa was the chairman of ZMDC not the person who approves the license. Masimirembwa only gets instruction from the top. When applying for such asserts as diamonds there a legal procedures. Firstly these guys applied through the permanent secretary of mines, if the perm sec approves he gives recommendation to the minister. The minister does due diligence and he recommends to the President. In the laws of Zim all precious stones, oils and metals are signed off by the President and takes 3 months. In this chain thats where the 6mil was took. He might be guilty but he did not eat this money alone. A lot of people in the last cabinet were involved.

One Minister went and sat cris crossed on the floor to beg a judge to exonerate a certain white man who had done a gold deal on behalf of the minister and if that white guy had sunk the minister would have sunk, Goodwills may sink but not alone. If Mugabe is sincere then Goodwills will not sink alone. by pointingthat Goodwills got a bribe means The president has enough information, my worry is he knows who else was/ were involved though he still picked them into cabinet.
