Mupera gets better with age

BULAWAYO – How Mine midfielder Menard Mupera is getting better with age like wine.

The former Black Rhinos, Highlanders and FC Platinum linkman is enjoying a new lease of life at Castle Premiership debutants How Mine and played a crucial role in his team’s 1-0 victory over Highlanders on Sunday.

Mupera showed the commitment of a true soldier as he did a sterling job of breaking down most of Highlanders’ raids and was seen on countless occasions putting his body on the line to deny his former team.

Philani ‘Beefy’ Ncube, the How Mine head coach, revealed in his post-match interview that their strategy had been to let Highlanders enjoy possession in their own half and try to catch them on the counter.

This required his players to be disciplined in defence as they sought to park a bus in front of their goal and Mupera’s performance was crucial for this plan to succeed.

The gap toothed midfielder is normally an adventurous individual who usually likes to get involved in attack to aid his forwards but on Sunday he stuck to playing in front of his twin centre backs Gilbert Banda and Herbert Dick.

Another factor that made it easy for Mupera to execute his role with ease was the positional indiscipline displayed by Highlanders’ central midfielders Simon Munawa and Mthulisi Maphosa.

Munawa and Maphosa failed to click and duplicated roles which resulted in their losing control of the crucial midfield department.

Mupera also played a blinder in the reverse fixture which ended in a 2-1 victory for How Mine and while he was not on target in both games his contribution was priceless.

A Bosso fan, Gift ‘Ghetto’ Nkala, said as a Highlanders follower he is puzzled why a player of Mupera’s calibre was not snapped up by Highlanders after he was let go by FC Platinum.

“What happened on Sunday is that we saw the Highlanders first team edging out the Highlanders second string side because most of the players who starred for How Mine have links with Bosso,” Nkala said.

Mupera, match winner Warren Dube, Banda, Dick, Brighton Dube and Qinani Sibanda are some of the players who have played for Highlanders, who were part of the victorious How Mine side that completed a shock double over Bosso.
