OH target NRL final berth

HARARE - Old Hararians skipper and flyhalf Tichafara Makwanya fancies his team’s chance of reaching their first Lion Lager National Rugby League final since 2007.

The Harare giants have been paired with their bogey team Matabeleland Warriors in the semifinals after the round robin stage of the league was completed at the weekend.

Mat Warriors have proved to be a tough nut to crack for OH in recent years but Makwanya is in a buoyant mood ahead of the clash on September 28.

“We need to work on our set pieces, especially at scrum time. I think we have got a big chance of beating them if we up our game on the physical aspect. We have shown the intent this season and have played as a unit,” he said

Makwanya has lead from the front all season and has been the club’s top performer with his deadly boot proving instrumental in the destruction of many teams in the league.

The Sables player’s heroics have ensured that OH finished the season first on the final log standings.

The old boys have only lost one match thus far and look like they can reach the Promised Land this season if they can maintain their form.

In the other semifinal, Old Georgians will host Harare Sports club in the other semifinal which promises to be an explosive encounter.

OGs player coach Grant Mitchell believes that his team still needs to work on a number of areas before going into the last four clash against HSC.

“We need to improve our intensity and efficiency at ruck time to ensure our ball is quicker and cleaner. This will also allow us to complete our phases and provide with forward ball.

“We also need to work harder to get into the correct defensive positions quickly, so we can shut down space for our opponents.”
