'Men hate using condoms'

HARARE - With flavours like strawberry, banana split and red cherry, there is a wide array of condoms to pick from.

There are also vibrating condom rings with batteries that last up to 20 minutes, there are silent pleasures of the femidom (the female condom), glow-in-the-dark condoms promising “30 minutes of glowing fun.”

Messages about the importance of using condoms have been pushed by HIV/Aids activists and health professionals for decades, but while many men admit they understand the risks associated with low condom use, many still take the unprotected plunge.

Health experts believe that male involvement and participation in HIV programmes is the entry point to ending the HIV/Aids epidemic in Zimbabwe.

More Zimbabwean women are infected with HIV, however more men are dying due to denial and seeking treatment late.

These dynamics also apply to voluntary counselling and testing as very few men are willing to take the step, according to experts.

Zimbabwe recorded the highest condom usage in the world over the last five years, according to the Zimbabwe Demographic Health Survey of 2011.

Currently the HIV prevalence rate is at 13,9 percent with 1,1 million people living with HIV/Aids and only 50 percent having access to treatment.

For many women, it is hard to negotiate safe sex with their partners due to the power dynamics in most relationships.

Women say there is a stigma associated with being in possession of condoms — many are viewed as promiscuous.

For such women, it is hard to introduce the issue of condom use to their spouses.

Meanwhile, it turns out that condoms are subject to a wide array of likes and dislikes.

Some say they do not like the sensation, some say they can look at it post-coitus and know when a woman is clean, men anonymously share the shocking reasons why they don’t often choose to wear condoms.

Kudzai, 31

I’m not sure why I don’t sometimes. I guess it has to do with how comfortable I am with the girl, not that that’s a good thing.

Josphat, 27

Certainly I refuse to use a condom with my wife and if I stray if the woman seems or appears clean, then I might consider not using a condom.

Never, 41

I’ll stop using a condom after I get to know her and know her track record.

But if I have doubts, its protection all the way. But I’m not comfortable with the female condom.

Glen, 27

To be honest, sometimes I sleep with some girls and afterwards I have to look back and curse myself.
But really still, sometimes you get in the mood and you realise you don’t have a condom and you just do your thing and hope for the best.

Because some, you just can’t resist. It would be nice if these irresistible women carried condoms with them.

Barnabas, 34

If she has done an HIV test and she is on birth control, I wouldn’t.

I don’t like the hassle of having to wear a condom in the heat of the moment.

Charles, 38

After sleeping with her three times. Its bye bye protection.

prevention is always better than cure. Do most man know that gonorrhea has now become difficult to cure and once you contract it, you cant bear kids. There are so many STD's out there, please play the game safe.

If you don't want to use a condom, you had better ensure you have a good funeral policy.

ADVICE: Do something for yourself, for your beloved family. Don't waste your time talking politics while others are enjoying their lives with money without talking politics. See how this Zimbabwean poor woman became a millionaire just by buying and selling accident cars. Very interesting. Go to (ACCIDENTEDCARS.COM), to see the methods and companies she was using to do that (ACCIDENTEDCARS.COM), it is a very simple idea but a very powerful One, Wake up Africans

As a counselor i have seen how men view condom use in a negative way,we need to step up efforts in terms of awareness so that men can come on board in terms of condom use.

@mufundisi. Prostitution has been there from time immemorial, even in the bible it is mentioned. King David the greatest son of God committed adultery. So this idea that you can just wish away these 'sins' by being a believer or whatever is ridiculous. The reality is these things happen because sometimes mind over matter does not work as we are biologically wired to copulate. The marriage concept is not natural hence the use of the condom still remains the only way out.
