Malawian prodigy returns to CAPS

HARARE - CAPS United welcome back Malawian hotshot Gerald Phiri, who is expected in the country in time for the epic Harare Derby on Sunday.

Phiri left Poland yesterday, where he was on a month-long trial stint with an undisclosed club. The club opted against signing the highly-rated attacking midfielder.

The 19-year-old ace will now re-join the Green Machine, giving coach Taurai Mangwiro more attacking options for Sunday’s clash with bitter rivals Dynamos at Rufaro Stadium.

Phiri, signed in the midseason transfer window by CAPS, had just featured three times for Makepekepe before his Poland trip. United paid Malawian outfit Mighty Wanderers $20 000 for his services.

“He is on his way back from Poland but he will be going to go for more trials in December,” CAPS United chief executive Joel Makuvire said yesterday.

“They were happy with the level of his skill; technically he impressed. But he is still lacking in fitness but he will have another shot in December. His trial was not really about us looking for a deal. This was for his own enrichment, to get a feel of the way they train over there, appreciating how football is played in Europe. Hopefully he will share that experience with his teammates.”
