King Shaddy to grace Masvingo gig

HARARE - Controversial dancehall star King Shaddy will make a maiden performance in the on-going Lion Lager Campus Night Activations Gigs at Mucheke Stadium on Friday.

The Mai Huni singer will share the stage with self-styled dancehall star Winky D and the on-fire Shinso Man.

The Masvingo concert is being hosted for Masvingo State University students by Delta Corporation through their Lion Lager brand.

It will be the first time Highfield-based King Shaddy will be participating in the students’ gigs sponsored by Delta Corporation which have already been held in Harare, Gweru, Mutare, Chinhoyi and Bulawayo.

For the on-fire Shinso Man, who made a great performance during a gig for Chinhoyi University of Science and Technology two weeks ago, the Mucheke Stadium concert will mark his second participation in the Lion Lager Campus Night Activations Gigs.

But as usual, Winky D, who has participated in all the Lion Lager-sponsored student gigs, will be the star attraction.

The Mafirakureva singer’s participation has been voted for by all the country’s universities.

The dancehall artiste has justified the popular support from students by delivering top-notch performances. Friday night’s gig will be an all-dancehall clash and it will be interesting to see if rising star Shinso Man and seasoned campaigner King Shaddy will threaten Winky D’s position at the apex of Zimbabwean dancehall music.

The fact that Delta Corporation has lined up only dancehall artistes to perform in Masvingo reflects the sponsors’ acknowledgement of the huge strides the music genre has made in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwean music cannot be talked about without names like Winky D, Sniper Storm, King Shaddy, Guspy Warrior, Shinso Man, Freeman and Dadza D being bandied around.

The Campus Night gigs are a build-up to the much-awaited October 12 Lion Lager Summer Festival set for Harare which will feature two international musicians.

Well-placed sources told the Daily News that the two international stars to perform in the Lion Lager Summer Festival are likely to be chosen from Busy Signal, Tarrus Riley and the Nigerian pair of P Square and D’banj.

P Square performed at last year’s Summer Festival. Votes from fans will determine the international stars who will play at the Summer Festival.
