Kombi crews fingered in criminal activities

HARARE - A kombi crew allegedly teamed up with two suspected armed robbers and robbed two passengers at gun point of their valuables and cash on different occasions.

Over the past few months several people in Harare reportedly lost their cash, cell-phones and valuables to kombi crews who are now operating with criminals.

Tichaona Katsamba,32, Shingirai Goremucheche,32, Ronald Maforo,32 and Aubrey Mangwiro, 21 were hauled before magistrate, Anita Tshuma who remanded the quartet in custody to September 19 for trial.

The four who are being charged with armed robbery were advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecutor Sharon Mashavira told the court that on the evening of August 17, Fradson Tawadini who was on his way to Mufakose boarded the quartet’s kombi at the intersection of Robert Mugabe Way and Chinhoyi Street.

The court heard that along the way, Katsamba who was driving stopped the vehicle whereupon one of the gang members suddenly produced a pistol and pointed it at Tawadini.

It is alleged the gang ordered him to surrender all his belongings.

Tawadini gave them his mobile phone and a wallet which contained $260 cash and identity particulars.

After the robbery, they allegedly pushed him out of the moving vehicle and sped off from the scene.

On August 22 in the afternoon, the gang picked up Comillious Mugwara at the intersection of Rezende and Robert Mugabe Way on the pretext that they were going to Mabvuku.

Allegations are that along the way, one of the gang members who was acting as the conductor asked Mugwara to help him close the door.

In the process, he allegedly searched Mugwara’s pockets and stole his mobile phone, a Nokia Asha 302.

The court heard that Mugwara later discovered that his phone was missing and when he confronted the “conductor”, the gang produced the pistol and threatened him before pushing him out of the vehicle and speeding off.
