Curtain comes down on Zim Fashion Week

HARARE - Curtains came down on the fourth edition of the Zimbabwe Fashion Week on Saturday night amid loud cheers, live performances and models’ impromptu gigs on the ramp.

Ace fashion designer Yemurai Mpinyuri brought the curtains down on the latest edition of the Zimbabwe Fashion Week, clinching the coveted Designer of the Year award.

Johannesburg-based House of Yemurai has contemporary casual clothing and also caters for the plus-size range.

Fuller figured models displayed the creations during the Grand Finale of the Zimbabwe Fashion Week in Harare.

Running under the theme “Fashion through the ages”, the biggest event in Zimbabwe’s fashion calendar saw the celebration of style icons, design and swag.

From eccentric to conventional designs, the three-day event carried it all. The collection displayed the elegance of Zimbabwean men and women while staying tuned in to international trends.

The major highlight of the week was the fashion awards, which saw some old, new and famous fashionistas winning in various categories.

South Africa’s Ukhozi FM DJ Mroza was delighted by the showcase. “I have seen a lot and I am really impressed,” DJ Mroza said.

“I was looking at the designs and they are really good, we will definitely take a leaf from what you guys are doing here. The only problem I noticed is that there is not much support. You know fashion is a big industry which can contribute to the country’s Gross Domestic Product and when it doesn’t receive the needed support, it does not serve its purpose."

“If only government or corporates or any interested individuals offered their full support, the Zimbabwe fashion industry would contribute immensely to the economy and create jobs. The designers really know what they are doing, they have good pieces.”

From a time of drab wear to a prolific fashion scene, Zimbabwe has certainly reinvented itself as a hub of creative style.

Home-grown designers and models were at the forefront, carrying the country onto international runways.

As Zimbabwe Fashion Week — whose official media partner was the Daily News — gets bigger and better by the year, thanks to talents like proprietor Priscilla Chigariro and her team, Zimbabwe’s fashion industry is blossoming on its own turf — as well as venturing well beyond it.
