ZOU official to pay $500 child support

HARARE - A Harare magistrate has ordered Zimbabwe Open University pro-vice chancellor Gabriel Kabanda to pay $500 as monthly maintenance for his minor child.

Magistrate Milton Serima ordered Kabanda to deposit the money into his wife Patience Kabanda’s account by September 30.

Kabanda was last week dragged to the Harare Civil Court by his wife who alleged her husband had neglected their three children.

She told the court that her husband was not giving any financial support to her and their three children.

“He hasn’t been providing for the children and does not buy food or groceries for the other two who live at their schools,” she said.

“I am applying for $8 650 to cater for myself and the children. I earn $1 205 and it has been difficult to cater for the family on my own. Kabanda earns more than $10 000 though he doesn’t meet his children’s needs.”

Kabanda said he could not afford the amount because he earns less than $3 000.

“I am currently employed at Zou as pro-vice chancellor earning about $2 740. She is claiming $1 000 for groceries and it’s not possible to eat so much food unless they are now for a school or crèche,” he said.

“We are currently not staying together because we had misunderstandings but I never refused to cater for the children. I am responsible for fees, medication and food. Two of our children are now 21 and 18 years old but they still remain my responsibility.”

He told the court that his wife should also contribute in the welfare of the children because she has businesses that give her a lot of money.

“My wife is a director and earns about $2 500 and should also participate in the welfare of the children,” Kabanda told the court.
